keeping boat tied up on mooring bouy

Planning on getting a Wellcraft 39 ft Express Crusier. Any pros and cons to keeping it morred to a mooring bouy. Around Oceanside Ca. military side of harbor.

Not sure if these would fall under pros and cons but before going to a mooring.

1. Find out what kind of mooring, how well it is installed, what kind of bottom.

2. Check the chain, eyes, shackles, etc running from the mooring to the buoy.

3. Check the pendant from the buoy to your boat.

4. Make sure pendant won't chafe going to the cleat or more probably, make sure you rig good chafing gear on the pendant.

Some pros and cons.

Pros
- probably a lot cheaper
- privacy

Cons
- have to take a dinghy or shuttle to get to the boat
- not connected to shore power to keep the batteries up


This could be pro or con. You are more isolated in the harbor so no dock neighbors keep an eye on things so maybe easier for someone to board your boat to steal something or no one to notice if you are taking on water and sitting low. But harder to get to so maybe avoid some casual theft?

I imagine the "Pro" would be you being the only guy on a mooring ball in that basin (or Oceanside in General) The "Con" would be the USMC and their reluctance to allow such things as mooring balls in their basin.

If you want to be on a Mooring in SoCal you 're pretty much limited to Catalina Island (not cheap) or San Diego Bay (cheap but usually a waitlist).

Good point. From the way the original question was posed I was assuming the OP had a mooring available. If there is not a mooring already in place in the harbor that you have access to then forget it.
