Question Insuring World Traveling Wooden Sail Boat

Hello!
My partner and I have a 74' wooden schooner we have been sailing/refitting up and down the east of the of the US. We plan to circumnavigate in no hurry.

Insurance is wacky as this is not a typical boat. We have a broker but the insurance they offer employs underwriters who are shocked anyone may want to be on or sail their boat year-round, even in hurricane safe places.

Any advice or recommendations for insurance companies who provide service for world cruisers would be MOST helpful and appreciated. Also, and bad experiences or people/businesses to avoid would be great as well.

Thanks!
(no idea how hashtags work on this platform but giving it a try for more exposure).

That is such an odd duck (wooden, large, older, world-wide coverage, etc, etc.) You will really have to go to a place that specializes in weird stuff.

You might try The Gowrie Group. They have a number of programs for difficult to insure things, including "classic and wooden yachts," and "historic naval ships" so they seem like a place to start...

Thank you so much! I’ll look into that.
She isn’t that old though. Built in 1984 and was totally refitted 2021-2022. We had an inspector take photos throughout the refit to show insurance how reliable and such it is. Apparently doing that is extremely beneficial to insurance rates. Thanks again!

Re: Insuring World Traveling Wooden Sail Boat

I've been trying for the past 20 min and can't figure out how to add a photo. I tried to add to gallery but it won't take anything from "photos" app on my mac or iphone. I see your profile photo shows under your user name, mine does not. Although, there is a photo (that at least I can see) when you click on my user name. It's an older photo but until I can figure this forum out a little more that will give you a good idea of what she looks like.
