Forex currency trading on the high seas ?

Hi, my fiancee & i have just bought a boat & are about to set off sailing in Feb initially cruising South East Asia, then further afield. I would really like to be able to trade from the boat, but am extremely warey of connection drop outs ect. & have limited knowledge about remote internet accessibility. Is there anyone out there that trades from a yacht or is familiar with connecting to the net & staying connected in the middle of no where at the most cost effective way?

Connection dropouts in SE Asia are no worse than in rural areas elsewhere. My recent experience in Malaysia, Indonesia and Philippines is that service is equivalent to California. Mainly because AT&T is deservedly one of the lowest rated providers anywhere.

You won't want to be moving around while making big bets on the markets. In any one place you should be fine. And that could be quite remote as there are cell phone towers in the smallest of villages. Remote villages are often only EDGE service (just like California), while bigger areas will be HSDPA, HSPA+, or whatever.

The business side of the deal is the most refreshing. Just about ever 20 yards is a kiosk selling airtime. SIMs can be had anonymously in most cities. No contracts.

I distinctly remember a mate losing 250k in coffee futures on the London market some 27 years ago when he couldn't get a constant landline connection at the time from Australia, was a very sombre BBQ that evening with us not knowing the details at the time.

Sat phones will give it for you but 'economical' may be the issue....

Trading Forex/Options/Commodities....it's like sitting on the other side of the table from the biggest & brightest & best funded & most tech equipped guys in the world. The outcome is predetermined. Your spotty internet connection will just move the end game closer.

Greetings and welcome aboard the CF, Hope.

I'd agree with Brogan007 & Laggoon4us.

Re: Forex currency trading on the high seas ?

I would suggest reading the CF threads on WiFi antennas and connections so you can get an idea of the equipment that works best on cruising boats. And, of course, anything you are dependent upon a "provider" for maintaining and monitoring his WiFi server, the less reliable a continuous unbroken connection will be in general.

Beyond that, the only "sure" way is to invest in the same equipment and services the "big boys" use like those mega-yachts you see with up to half a dozen gigantic domes perched on their 5-spreader rigs. If you intend to make serious money in a serious business like Forex or other "options" markets then you probably need to be ready to spend serious money on your equipment to be able to compete.

Hope - Just curious: Trading seems like a good way to make money while cruising. Are you already successfully trading? O/w, what others have said seems to be the concensus: there are one of two outcomes, you will loose money quickly or you will loose slowly.
