Which is why if you tell a newbie WHY you have 3 buckets on board, what they are used for, Why you need more than one, you will help out. probably take less words then you wrote above!

I have a bucket which I painted a brown stripe on the outside bottom and a yellow stripe above it. Guess what i use that for?
I have another bucket with a fish spray painted on it. Guess why?
My regular swabbing bucket is plain.

We studied buckets. Four bucket were not enough. Six buckets were too many. Five buckets were just right.

I am new to this forum and this has been my first season sailing. I went out on a friends sailboat one time on Galveston Bay and was hooked right away. Our family has been boating for over 20 years and my advice here would be to by an inexpensive smaller sailboat ( maybe a fixer upper) and see what you think. That's the route I took and I love it. A 20'-22' boat is much easier to learn on and the mistakes can be less expensive, too. If you've got any sailing clubs nearby, volunteer on somebody's crew.

I took a minor in buckets. We looked extensively into theories about appropriate fill lines and in the upper level classes we even got into proper weight distribution when carrying two buckets.

Oh, and even better, the singer can complain about his guitar strings being old and not being able to afford new ones, and how the guitar string store is 50 miles away and he can't afford gas and besides his tires are flat and the gas station charges for use of the air pump an how he won't get gas there anyway since the station is owned by the woman who seduced his girlfriend into a lesbian relationship and her former husband was driving the train that ran over his dog

Yes it would have taken less words (well, maybe - I do tend to ramble on!).......but the bucket example was intended to be illustrative of a wider point.......plus I suspected it might help change the tone of the thread, which might help OP more than a hands on guide to buckets .

Plus of course I have learnt a bit more about other folks and buckets . Not sure what I am going to do with that new knowledge yet , but it all goes into the pot (bucket?!) - even if it probably displaces some other titbit of knowledge, like how to navigate using a pencil .

I understand the need for multiple buckets, should we continue the discussion and discuss size? Also perhaps an opinion poll regarding collapsable buckets, their advantages/disadvantages, effectiveness per cubic deciliter and so on?

I have both a plastic bucket and also a couple of collapsable ones due to storage etc. All told I have 3 buckets (not counting the small one in the dinghy)
