Buying boat in WA, need info re: process

Hey everyone,

We took a look at a bristol 27, and submitted an offer. The owner has accepted our offer and we are proceeding forward with the sale.

Since this is my first time buying a boat, I am in need of some help. What sort of things do I need to do in terms of licensing for the sale of the boat?

I live in Washington state, and will be keeping the boat here in WA. I know the boat is registered till June 2016, so do I need to re-register the boat? What about transferring the title to my name?

We are meeting up this afternoon to do the sale and to transfer the slip over to our name, so much help would be greatly appreciated!

Reading between the lines of your post, I am assuming it is a state titled and registered boat. If it is a documented vessel another procedure is required.

The current title has provisions for transfer/bill of sale. I believe it has statements that the seller warrants the vessel to be free of all liens and encumberances. The seller then has 10 days to file a Notice of Sale with the State with the purchasers contact info. You must then 're-title, pay your tax and register the boat. Your will not receive any credit for the existing registration.

As it is currently moored in a marina, you will shortly be required to provide proof of liability/environmental insurance. A recent marine survey may be required to obtain such a policy.

If it is documented, the best course is to hire a transfer agent.

I was a recent seller of a similar vessel. It was pretty straight forward compared to the documented vessel procedure.

Congratulations. Hope it goes well.
John
