We have tried a few boat insurance companies and keep getting denied for no experience and too large a boat. its only a 36ft. Any one know of any insurance companies we should try? We have called boat US and United Marine Underwriters as well as state farm.

Re: Boat insurance with no boat experience?
Are you submitting '0' boating experience? What about ASA courses, charters, and experience as crew?

Re: Boat insurance with no boat experience?
they are saying boat ownership experience. We have had sailing lessons but haven't been able to get into the ASA yet. but they are wanting 1, 5 or 10 years exp so far depending on the place. Progressive and all state wont do anything over 35 ft.

Re: Boat insurance with no boat experience?
We took ASA courses and bought a brand new Jeanneau DS40 in 2003 -- our first and only boat - getting insurance was an issue - it was the experience thing
Found Bill Hodgens of Yachtinsure and he made it happen -- good guy and knows his stuff and will work with you -- tell him chuck and patty on soulmates sent you
good luck

Boat insurance with no boat experience?
Many of my customers who buy large motor yachts (over 50ft) can't get insurance at first and are required to hire a captain to provide a certain number of hours of onboard instruction before being insured themselves. Usually they ask for 20 to 40 hours followed by a letter from me. So far no problems and in every case they did need the supervised time aboard. Might work if you still have trouble.

Re: Boat insurance with no boat experience?
Allstate has been great with us on our 40 foot boat. Only issue is they won't write a new policy on a boat over 25 years old. Maybe fact that I've had home and car insurance through the same agent for 25 plus years helps?

Re: Boat insurance with no boat experience?
I had lots of sailing experience - dinghies and big boat charters but had never owned my own boat. We had similar problems when we bought our first boat a Beneteau 423. Our marine insurance broker was a big help. Naturally the final solution was financial, but she got the company talking. In our case it was to have a higher deductible. Give Marie at Admiralty Insurance a call. She can likely help. Admiralty Insurance

Thats not correct. Progressive currently insures my Morgan OutIsland 41' sailboat. Call progressive again.

Re: Boat insurance with no boat experience?
I assume you are looking for replacement value collision insurance.
Try applying for minimum coverage liability insurance. After the policy is in place 6 months add collision coverage.
I also drop all but comprehensive insurance during the "on the hard" winter time.
Also, if you have bought a boat over 35' you most likely have had plenty of boat time, day trips with other sailors, acting as part of a crew even if it is just untying from dock and assisting in tying up, cleaning up the ship, helping varnish and paint, enjoying the ride or whatever. Add these to you hours, days, months or years on your application.

Re: Boat insurance with no boat experience?
I agree that Yachtinsure is very easy to work with. And do list your experience on other boats. I know this seems obvious but make sure you have taken the Boat Safety course for your state - free through Boat US.

Re: Boat insurance with no boat experience?
I got insurance for my first boat, 39', having only sailed 3 months and had taken ASA up to bareboat. I got it from Markel via IMS. They did require that I get an additional 3 days of "instruction".

Re: Boat insurance with no boat experience?
When I bought my first boat the insurance companies only asked if I currently had any boat insurance not did I have any boating experience. Needed insurance for a year before I was able to get it reduced. This was for a liveaboard. No idea if non-liveaboard would have been handled differently.
There was also a section for ASA and Coast Guard certifications but their primary interest was if I was currently insured.
This was 2006 in the San Francisco Bay area.
