“#11 Beware The Forums
If ever there was a cauldron that boils up “the sum of their fears” and then serves the result up in an ugly soup of terror, it’s the modern sailing forum, in which posters keep adding their own fears to a subject until the thread is scores (or even hundreds) of comments long.

Much of it is simply oft-repeated memes without much rational thought about validity. And a distressing amount of it is simply other cruisers trying to puff up their egos, or dampen their own fears, by telling the rest of us how smart and well prepared they are.

So sure, we can learn stuff from forums, but we gotta filter it…big time.”

Whatcha think peeps?

Yeah, I completely agree. It's all just irrational fear. There is nothing to be afraid of out there on the ocean, nothing to learn, nothing to discuss. Just go and do it -- what could possibly go wrong? The ocean is our friend; the boat will sail and repair itself.

Oh, and so, what are we all doing here then?

Well, actually I am not allowed to go anywhere else. Not the boat, not work, the pub, nope just stay at home. However, the Gov has given me a £62 tax break to cover the costs of working from home for the year, nice one

So for now, its a mix of CF and You Tube, whilst the boat slowly goes a green colour, the motorbike battery flat and the car rusty.

Re: BEWARE THE FORUMS

forums are mostly about entertainment, complaining, one upmanship, blah blah blah, fear, I'm an expert let me prove it, you are an idiot, with a little info and help throw in

the challenge is to be able separate each if possible

far as this forum goes I NEVER got the answer to the question I originally joined for because apparently it either "depends" or doesn't "count"

Re: BEWARE THE FORUMS

Well, of course you have to filter it... big time! That's true for everything you see, hear, or read. If you swallow it whole -- no matter what "it" might be -- without at least a little bit of critical thinking and analysis, a little bit of filtering, then you are being extraordinarily foolish.

That has been true since the first caveman told a whopper of a fish story.

that's why I am ahead of the game and haven't had any hull/deck/rudder/keel issues on a 20 year old boat

Disagree! We are numismatists, always looking for a new coin to phrase!

LOL!!!! You speak of what you do not know or understand.

It's easy to arm chair quarterback. Try being a moderator. Moderators are extremely sensitive to the balance between letting things get out of hand, and allowing people the freedom to have open discussions. It's a difficult razor's edge to traverse. All moderators are well aware that as a thread continues, it degrades, and that out of hand threads only serve to drive people away, not toward the forum. The underlying motivations you speak of simply do not exist. Moderators are volunteers with no vested interest in the site.

Volunteer to be a moderator.

For those with cruising experience it is like fingernails on chalkboard for two hours.
