What Happened to all the Great Lakes Sailors?????
We left Chicago in 2018, for the second time, for the Tropics. And, I still like to hear from some Midwest sailors and their experiences. Where did you guys go?????

We're powerboaters on Lake Ontario. There are certainly still plenty of sailors in the area. Even amongst the cruisers we meet in the area I'd say a fairly small number seem to have much online presence, particularly outside of Facebook groups.

My heart is still on Lake Superior, but my boat has been on the salty brine since 2017.

We pick up our new ride this January in South Africa and plan on sailing her home to spend at least one season cruising the Great Lakes before heading through the canal and exploring the South Pacific.

Hi, Mike,
I noticed you relocated to Newfoundland. Unfortunately, when we transited the St Lawrence in 2018 we ran out of time ,due to weather, to include L'Anse Aux Meadows in our journey. It remains one of the great disappointments in my cruising life. You are very fortunate to cruise/live in such a beautiful place although I think I'd pass on the Winters. Can you share some of your journeys around the big island?

We're here, just sailing around. My other half does the blog and is about 2 years behind on posts. Last summer we were in the North Channel for a couple weeks.
We have a 30' O'Day on Lk St Clair.

Yes, this land is an incredible cruising area. It’s got us captivated, which is why we’ve lingered since 2017. For the first few seasons we were based on the west coast, in Corner Brook. Then in 2019 we sailed the northern route to our current base in on the NE side, in Lewisporte. We visited L’anse Aux Meadows on that trip, and saw our first icebergs. We lost three seasons due to Covid, so we’re still exploring the waters up here.
I don’t want to highjack this thread, but once I’m back in civilization I could start a Newfoundland one. I’m currently off, although getting good cell coverage (hence these posts).
I will say, the north shore of Lake Superior remains as a top cruising area in my books. On most of our journey down the Great Lakes, and out the St. Lawrence, we often mused to each other: “Why did we leave Superior?” Of course, about 1/2 way down the river we started to see why. And Newfoundland is on par with the Big Lake, but also includes icebergs and whales.

Hi, Mike,
Did you anchor in the bay east of the site? I can't remember its name but it was on our list as an anchorage. How long were you able to stay since the anchorage seemed to be weather-dependent? We also wanted to visit Sop's Hole where there are reportedly hunting pits that date to the Viking presence on the island.

We anchored in Garden Cove, which is one further east of the closer, and more obvious one. Garden is more protected, but we still ended up with a pretty rough and rolly few nights.

Hi, Mike,
That's the anchorage we chose as well. Lucky Man to have traced the footprints of the first Europeans to discover North America in your own longboat!

Hi, K,
We anchored in Lake St. Clair before entering the Detroit River which we found both to be visually very clean before entering the sadly polluted Lake Erie.
