Western Islands Harbour - Georgian Bay

Planning our next trip and found this on the charts 12-13nm NW of Christian Island. Has anyone been there and stayed overnight? Looks a little exposed. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

Re: Western Islands Harbour. Georgian Bay

Actually, another Dave I know, told me about anchoring at the Westerns for a couple of nights. Mostly rock and had to tie spiderweb to shore. Powerboater that make it a regular spot was not impressed he tied across the narrow bay. Couple other powerboats came in and blocked him in with tieing to shore. He's very easy going so went along. Found the spot interesting. Looks to be very exposed, but have not been there myself.

How are the water levels up there. Looking to sail out of Midland Sept. 11 to Beausoleil island and around Honey Harbour for a few days. This will be my first trip there. I have a macgregor 26C so I can get into 18" of water. I have the ports guide and charts and GPS.

Water levels are at or a little above chart datum this summer. You'll have no issues with the MacGregor.

Thanks. Looking forward to one last trip. First time there with a sailboat. Used to go the 12 mile bay fishing a lot. Looks like weather should be good.

Re: Western Islands Harbour - Georgian Bay

Midland to Beausoliel has lots of deep water so will not be a problem.

Just have a good look over the charts and pay attention ot the chartplotter if sailing in areas off the small craft route. All along the mainland coing out of Midland Bay, is a sandy shoal that comes out a fair distance into the bay. Also pay attention to the 2 green buoys well off the south tip of Beausoliel, which mark another sany shoal, even at 18" could be an issue.

There are a few areas of open water with rock shoals, so check for those before heading out.

If you anchor, there a 3 good areas. Cedar Springs is the main dock area and you'll see a lot of boats anchored there, just past the narrow passage between the red / green buoys. Other spot I like is Tonche Point and furthest north is Chimney Bay.

Wind is supposed to be from the NE this weekend, ( check again before you go) so owuld favour Chimey Bay or just anchor out in the mian area along shore somewhere.

You may want to go around Roberts Island past Picnic Island to Honey Harbour and not take the shortcut through Big Dog Channel, although you could probably make it, it gets dicey in a few spots.

Re: Western Islands Harbour - Georgian Bay

Thanks Scott. That helps. Looks like the weather should cooperate for once. I figured I pick my anchorages according to the wind. Leaving this afternoon.
