Has anyone here done the trent?

I did the Upper Trent a few years ago when I had the ChrisCraft. There were some nice parts but it wasn't my cup of tea. That being said, a lot of people really like it. I'm probably too antisocial to spend most nights at marinas and too impatient to adhere to a 10km/hr speed limit. I did rent a houseboat with friends a few years before that and did quite enjoy the area around Buckhorn lake and Big Island.

It's all about what you're looking for.

i single-handed my 41 ft trawler thru the t-s 14 yrs ago and it was one of the prettiest fun trips i've been on (as part of the great loop) in 40k nm of cruising. i did it in may so there were very few other boats in the system. i was told by alot of lock masters that summer is full of newbys and houseboat renters who haven't a clue in the locks so put plenty of fenders/hay bales/tireswhatever to protect your boat from knuckleheads...

Go early or late but do not go in July/August. These lakes are small and in summer are infested with idiots in boats of all sizes, shapes and descriptions without the slightest understanding of the rules of the road on a boat. This is cottage country and the boat traffic in summer can be staggering. We kept a boat on the system for 7 years and gave it up for the above reasons, it was safer on the 401 than the TSW. To our thinking, the nicest part is that from Peterborough to G. Bay, especially the Severn. From Trenton to Peterborough it's rather a slog. We currently live about half a mile from Buckhorn Lake and the noise from boat traffic on that lake has to be heard to be believed. Truly unfortunate because it is a very scenic area and it's a nice trip at the right time of the year.

We went several years ago from Trenton to Port Severn our 26ft sailboat (with stepped mast) and thoroughly enjoyed it. We went in late season so the traffic was not an issue. My only complaint is at maximum speed of 5MPH, we had to keep moving and didn't have much opportunity to stop along the way over our two week trip.

Of all the Cruising Guides I'd go for Ports.

I've used ours for 4 years in Georgian Bay and is invaluable the amount of info on routes, places to stop, restock, eat out, refuel etc. etc. Can be difficult to look up internet while underway.

I grew up on the Trent. From my Dad's farm we could see the prettiest section, just between Glen Ross and Campbellford. I did a lot of canoeing and fishing on that river but that was long ago.

I will hopefully be bringing back my motoryacht in early June from Keswick, Ontario and running through the T/S locks.. My homeport will be Eldean's... Are we going to be neighbors?

I did it three years ago form south to north. Loved the trip on on a 26 foot Gramp (4'3" draft.) We did it just after the locks opened for the season. Even that early the weeds in some areas were a PITA but they washed off in the locks. Depth in some areas is an optimistic 4 feet. Grounded twice in mud and was pulled off the first time by a passing power boat and the wind was kind enough to spin us around and off on the second one. Food and fuel is readily available and there are enough marinas along the way should you need one. Providing the weather is nice it is a wonderful trip. Take lots of pictures.
