Quick Route - North Channel > Hudson River

I'm in the North Channel and am looking for insight regarding the fastest route from here to the Hudson River. We are in a 36 foot sailboat that draws 4.5 feet. We prefer not to sail at night. Our top motor speed is 6 kts.

We were considering the trent severn and then across ontario to oswego. However, some folks we have talked to say that crossing lake ontario with the stick on the deck can be hazardous and unpleasant, so we are now leaning towards Lake Huron to Lake Erie and taking down the mast for the erie canal. Any insight on routes, as well as suggested locations for taking down the mast are much appreciated.

Hello,

Most people prefer the Tren-Severn to Oswego Canal option. It is much shorter and boater friendly. The Lake Erie route is significantly longer and contains alot of of commercial traffic.

As far as your mast being on deck across Lake Ontario, you should be mindful, but not overly worried. Make sure it is well secured and just pick the right day(s) to cross. You may have to wait a few days to cross the lake, but you'll still be time ahead vs. going the Lake Erie route.

See the guide link below for places to have your mast stepped on the Hudson south of Albany. Castleton Boat Club is the way to go if you want to do it yourself; if not the other two will do just fine.

Yeah, Trent Severn and L. Ontario's the way to go. Mast on deck for the short hop should be no problem if you pick your day. When you get to Oswego enter Lock 8 right away, seeing your mast is already down and tie up after the lock. You can then call in to get your cruising permit. This way you don't have to go in the marina for the night and it's a lot quieter and a better spot in the canal.

While on the Trent, check out Burleigh Falls (actually rapids). Great for swimming! Recommend lifejackets and water shoes if you do the rapids.
