Re: Iceboating Great Lakes region

I couldn't read the initial post or see the complete photo because of a pop up ad for home depot. It seems I would have to put another app on my IPad to eliminate it. Pisses me off and I think that soon I will leave this forum, which is crummy because it is one of only two I am involved in. And the other is just the Nextdoor website.

Thanks for the post! Great memories.
Would not have guessed "loud". What makes all the racket, skates on the ice?

Re: Iceboating Great Lakes region

I cannot believe they are still going this (sailing the Jack Frost that is)! My dad was into ice boating in the 70s which is where I was exposed. The Frost was an antique then!

Sound? On a boat that big it was everything groaning and creaking and pulling along with yes, the ice. On the Hudson varied like crazy. Lakes were better.

So cool to see all the pictures that were just posted! I remember the cold and still wonder why the hell I live in Alaska!

Skimmers and DN make skate noise. The incredibly fast E boats sound like a freight train, I think it's more than the skates.

Re: Iceboating Great Lakes region

Oh yes, the beauty of ice-boating...one to two pair of heavy wool socks, a layer of smart wool underwear (tops and bottoms), some heavy lined or wool pants, heavy wool sweater, snowmobile suit, warm boot of your choice (usually heavy and bulky but keeps the feet warm for a while), heavy gloves or lined mittens, nice knit hat/cap, and a helmet. Now that you look like the Pillsbury Dough Boys brother, you waddle out on the ice and try to wedge yourself into the cockpit of that little rocket and you're off!! Well, that's if you can move!
Okay, so I embellished it a little, but not much!
