Apostle Island Questions

I bought a 30' sailboat last fall in Bayfield. We plan to spend weekends cruising the Apostle Islands while learning the boat. My questions are about the anchorages. Are there mooring balls, or are you anchoring? If you are anchoring, what kind of anchor is best? I am no stranger to Lake Superior. I have spent a bit of time on her shoreline, but never by boat. Between the rock and sunken timber I am concerned about getting the anchor back up. Are there any other gotchyas around the Apostle Islands that a person should know about? Thanks.

Re: Apostle Island Questions

Set up a trip line on your anchor.

Congrats on your new boat!

Re: Apostle Island Questions

I spent a lot of years sailing Superior, but only once ventured down through the Apostles. I don't recall any mooring balls outside of the town sites.

So yes to anchoring. I don't recall the bottoms, but I'm pretty sure it's mostly sand/mud. I prefer a good, over-sized new-gen anchor like a Spade, Rocna or Excel.

One thing, there really are no perfect anchorages in the Apostles. You're basically anchoring in the lee of the islands, so you choose your side depending on the expected wind conditions. Mostly we get westerly winds (as I'm sure you know), so anchoring on the east side is generally the plan, but you do have to be prepared to move around if the wind shifts.
Why go fast, when you can go slow.

Re: Apostle Island Questions

2nd vote on the trip line. While anchored in Presque Isle Bay on the south side of Stockton a couple years ago our chain wrapped completely around an ~8ft timber. Without the trip line we likely would have lost the anchor and chain. The trip line is also a useful visual while gaining experience with anchoring. Congrats on the new boat!!
