Windvane that can go off centerline
I have a Hunter Legend 40 1984. Looking for a windvane. In Jacksonville, FL. Can travel reasonable distance for pickup. Thx!

Re: Windvane that can go off centerline
If you are trying to offset the swim ladder it puts a servo pendulum pretty far offset. Any deep heeling/rolling can have that swinging pendulum come up and skipping on top of the water or very deep in it. I know hydrovane can be better since its auxiliary rudder doesn't swing but even so, it may only be partially out or very deep.
There's also the a bit more protection centerline.
I moved the ladder on an 85 h34 I once had.
Good luck on finding a good used one!

Re: Windvane that can go off centerline
I'd like to keep the swim ladder functional. But if it doesn't work out I'll remove and do as you suggest. Thx for the comment.

Re: Windvane that can go off centerline
I'm fairly certain that the 'Hydrovane' steering system works off the centre line.

True, so do the servo pendulum units, but it really has everything to do with how far offset and length of pendum or or auxiliary rudder.
For perspective, picture a twin rudder boat heeled over, which rudder is steering, which is out of the water.

Re: Windvane that can go off centerline
Hydrovane says 70 percent of their installs are off center and the maximum distance was something like four feet.

Re: Windvane that can go off centerline
I'd like a Hydrovane, but there are also a few other manufactures I've heard about that can also go off center. Buying a used one kinda lowers the "being picky" score.

Re: Windvane that can go off centerline
If you go the same route as I did using a hydrovane, you will need to pull the fuel tank to gain access to the inside of the transom for the backing plate/block. Not a bad thing as I cleaned it out while it was out. the tank will fit out without having to dismantle the aft bulkhead, just be patient and jiggle it a bit. The upper mount backing plates/blocks are in the cockpit locker.
The ladder is still usable and can be used to attach
/remove the rudder. I used the ladder while fitting hydrovane while the boat was still in the water..

Re: Windvane that can go off centerline
Ditto on the hydrovane. I moved my ladder to the side to install my Aries liftup..I rarely use the stern ladder while underway.so.works fine off.to the side.

Hydrovane, very sturdy, reliable, flexible installation. Best investment I ever made!

Re: Windvane that can go off centerline
I can sell you a standard vane and a short shaft to get you started.
They are excess to my requirements.
