Watch out for fraudster!!!

I was hoping to buy an FX 23 anchor. Unfortunately somebody beat me to it but a guy named "Skinnyship" on this forum said he had one for sale for $180. We asked for his venmo account to which we sent the money.
The guy who received the money does not know anything about the anchor and we just got ripped off.

I really did not expect this from a cruiser forum of fellow sailors and boaters. This hurts the established trust within the community.

The story doesn't make much sense.

If the guy that got the money isn’t the same guy, then he should send the money back shouldn’t he?

Re: Watch out for fraudster!!!

We're hoping the guy will have the decency to return the money, but I'd be surprised as it just hit our acct.

Thank you moderator for the quick reply and action!!

Re: Watch out for fraudster!!!

Wife just told me the guy's returning the money.
This is weird, why would a guy tell you he's got something to sell and then give you the wrong Venmo acct?
Dunno, don't care...

Re: Watch out for fraudster!!!

Yep, he's a scammer. I also replied to a post for an item that had already sold fast. Skinnyship messaged me saying he had one too and was selling because of cancer. It seemed suspicious because when I looked at his profile, he had just joined the forum that same day and had zero posts. Also, he didn't have an ad running for the item. I messaged back asking for pics and description. Then he asked for my personal email address. That's when I alerted the forum and they banned him pretty quick.

Nowadays, you have to have your antenna up for everything online. It's amazing to me that someone figured out a scam like this on a boating forum. It's really a shame, but it's reality.

I like the quote from Judge Judy: "if it doesn't make sense, it's probably not true."

In hindsight, I probably should have posted something alerting others on this site, but I didn't want to disparage someone without facts and I just found out from the forum admin that they banned him. Perhaps the forum can alert us, if this happens again

That is kind of what I was getting at. Not a very good scam if the scammer couldn't redirect the funds to himself. Not really a scam if you're able recover the money.

Come on!! you know what I'm saying. The scammer didn't get the money and it sounds like you're getting your money back. Did you really get scammed?

I wish we could, but if you could see the number we deal with each week it would be an impossible task for the volunteer moderators. About the best we can do is to delete and ban anyone looking like a spammer or fraudster and on to the next one. Its a bit like a game of wack a mole

Re: Watch out for fraudster!!!

Well here's what the lady replied:

"It was refunded to your wife and I’m not sure why I was reported
I would never ever cheat anyone
I can only receive money via check or money order so I needed a friends help to help me receive funds via Venmo
That was just what happened
You can do your findings as I never and will never scam anyone
I’m a honest woman."

I've asked her to write the moderator to explain.
I also explained that is fine to get paid from somebody who has an another account on venmo but that is important to be upfront about it and be honest as we try to keep business dealings on the up-and-up.

So it looks like just a bad case of miscommunication and inexperience of selling things on the internet. No harm no foul I've been refunded my money so I'm okay

Not really an attempted murder if the victim survives?
