Re: Watch out for fraudster!!!

Just got ripped off myself after looking through the classified section of cruisers forum for a little compressor. I put a wanted ad on the classifieds and was answered over the forum by a guy who directed me to call one of his buddies who had one. I did, it was a NY # (which evidently forwarded overseas) and he said he had one. I asked to send him the 200 bucks through paypay and he said no he wanted it through bitcoin. I worked out how to be able to do it all day...got it sent then ... that was it... no compressor...

This should be a huge flag that it's a scam, or some other nefarious deal.

Millennial criminals maybe .

I'm sure most people who deal in bitcoin are upstanding citizens (ok, at least some are). But it's also the perfect currency for any blackmarket dealing. It's become a pretty standard warning.

If someone were to offer bitcoin as one of a few possible payment options, then I might consider it legit. But to insist on bitcoin is a big red warning sign that you should stop.

BTW, I'm very sorry to hear you got scammed. It really sucks. Everyone is susceptible to these criminals, especially as the scams get more and more sophisticated.

Re: Watch out for fraudster!!!

I had the same thing happen twice, looking for a westerbeke rotaryaire control panel. First guy ‘had a problem with his PayPal account’, could I please use western union. Then another new guy from California (1 day old account) has a friend who has one, text him ( New York number)

Death by deli slicer to all of them, a 1/16” at a time, starting at the feet....

Re: Watch out for fraudster!!!

The lady asked me today if there was other stuff to buy that she had available... Couldn't believe it.
Maybe one day, she'll honestly post pics and stuff with her own PayPal acct.
Until then she's definitely in my spam list.
It's sad really, she may be somebody hurting for money selling off stuff from their boat to make ends meet....
I did explain to her that it's a sign of the times that immediately we call out a scam if it's not very straight Forward.

Try Bacon Sails in Annapolis or Sailor Man in Ft. Lauderdale. There is also a chandlery at New England Boatworks in Portsmouth RI that has a lot of used boat parts on consignment.
