I’ve used this
Simrad WP32
wheelpilot for the last 5 years on my
Hunter Legend 35.5 sailboat. I’ve used it in lots of
wind and sea state conditions motoring and sailing all over the
Puget Sound,
San Juan Islands, and the
west coast of
Vancouver Island. It has always worked and has given me no trouble. I am planning on heading
offshore, so I decided to install a quadrant connected
autopilot for a little more strength in a large following sea or with unbalanced sail trim.
This wheelpilot is very easy to install. Basically, remove your
wheel, clamp it to your
pedestal, reinstall
wheel, connect
power. From there, just do the quick calibration and it is ready to use to steer to a heading. It does support Simnet and NMEA2000, so it can also steer by
wind, a
chartplotter course, or an external
compass, but connecting these items is optional.
