Replacement or repair of acrylic hatch

Looking for a replacement hatch for a 1998 Hunter 340. To the best of my knowledge, it's a Lewmar 20" x 20" Coastline hatch. My current hatch has a lot of crazing (typical) in the plexi-glass. The alternate plan could be a repair. Has anyone had experience with Select Plastics, Conn.?

Re: Replacement or repair of acrylic hatch

Theres a plastics fabricator in Ft. Lauderdale that posts alot on Ebay..I htink his replacement hatch lenses are around a $100.... I think you can ship him the opening part of the hatch and he will replace the lens and ship it back to you to reinstall.

Do a search on Ebay for HATCH LENS. Hes got lots of postings..

Check out tap plastics in CA. Very reasonable prices, lots of different translucent shades. Take measurements, they can also pre round the corners for you just get the right measurement for the radius. Make sure to order cast acrylic.

Re: Replacement or repair of acrylic hatch

I haven't done my hatches with select yet because off the lead time (4-6 weeks) but I did order all new portlight windows from them which just bolt in. Everything fit perfectly. As I understand it they are the only ones that have the actual factory green tint of the lewmars. I would definitely use again

Re: Replacement or repair of acrylic hatch

Irwin Marples 1901037 Laminate Flush Router Bit With 3/8" X 1/2", 1/4" Shank

With a $30 laminate trimmer router at Harbour Freight.
Use the old lens to cut out the new piece by holding them together with $3 spring clamps. I used 4 and moved them around as I cut the lens out. I cut out 10 in about 2 hours. I bought the acrylic at a plastic shop for $125 for a 4x8 sheet of 3/8". Then they had some scraps for $5/lbs. Probably had less than $150 in all 10 lens's. Dow 795 for the sealant.

THIS^^^

If you only need the crazed lenses replaced I find Select Plastics a bit pricey.

Re: Replacement or repair of acrylic hatch

We've also done the "duplicate them with a router and trimmer bit" process. Double sided tape works well to hold them together. If you want your whole hatch rebuilt, then pull it and send it to Hatchmasters (Select Plastics). Oh, yeah: Do NOT use polycarbonate for a hatch. They flex enough that you can go thru them if you step on them!
