raymarine autopilot, edson pedestal, ritchie compass, navpod

I need price recommendations.

I just bought my first boat that wasnt a tiller. I am not familiar with this stuff
So with that context, I have researched ebay and craiglist..I even asked Jeeves.
Markets are all over the place for everything.

The autopilot looks like a ev-100 and has the controller and the round thing in the boat. I didnt want to rip those out without knowing if its worth it. Or wondering if that can run a tiller pilot

the axiom is a 9

Stuff can separate if needed.

Trade: for a tiller head and tiller for cape dory 27 and/or couple hundred yards of dyneema sk75

So you’re looking to rip it all out and re-install a tiller? If so, you should be able to get a tiller head casting for a CD - there’s a guy in Rhode Island who casts all sorts of classic boat fittings. Forget the name right now, but search on it

This is assuming your rudder post still comes through the cockpit sole.

A complete Edson binnacle is a very expensive item. The pedistal itself is a couple of thousand, plus a quadrant down below, pulleys, etc. The guard is a few hundred, the pod around $400, a raymarine wheel pilot is around $1300, and an axiom 9 is around $900.

So altogether a big chunk of change.

Ps - there’s a acu100 and sensor somewhere belowdecks on The boat that are part for the autopilot, and the quadrant, chain/wire, and pulleys below deck go with the wheel system.

Its a good setup, but may be hard to find a buyer for everything. May be easier to remove pilot and electronics to sell separately.

Notice no gear shift or throttle on the control head. That may be a big negative for some.

Yea it was taking up the whole cockpit. The price was right, or it was almost a dealbreaker.

Thanks for the capedory . org reference. I'll give that another try... I thought that whole site was sort of dead in the water, no pun intended.

As a fellow Cape Dory owner (CD30), I would recommend going to the Cape Dory facebook page or Cape Dory website: The Cape Dory Board • Index page and posting there. There are other CD owners that may be looking to make the switch from tiller to autopilot/pedestal steering. That looks to be a great setup you have there.

Interested in the compass if you’ll separate. Sent a pm but not sure it went thru.

Re: raymarine autopilot, edson pedestal, ritchie compass, navpod

As stated the Autopilot uis an EV-100 and there are two more components located somewhere below decks (the flux compass / brain and the control unit. Since a complete new EV-100 kit sells for just under $1500 including all of the cables, you may be able to get $400-$500 for the used stuff. The touchscreen unit alone new is a couple of hundred so someone may buy it just for that.

The compass with the stainless body looks in good shape and should go for $100-200.

Keep it. You will be regretting changing it out in the long run. If you have enough room you can still tiller. Just remove the yoke or loosen enough to allow it to free wheel. The tiller head socket should still be on the rudder and accessible through a deck plate centered over the post. I have a CD 27 d, have Edison wheel and would not change it. Have the tiller for use in case of failure.

Re: raymarine autopilot, edson pedestal, ritchie compass, navpod

I'm interested in the autopilot components and possibly the pedestal guard if you're willing to sell those parts separately. These parts would fit my Sabre 28 pretty nicely.

I hear you; A lot of people like wheels, and I don't think there are anything wrong with them.

For me personally, I have my thoughts:
1 The pedestal would block the use of a tiller, if the wheel failed.
2 It takes up the whole cockpit.
3 Too many holes in the cockpit; i didnt build it so I didnt know how it was done. Glad I took it out because underneath was rotten and flexible.. due to shoddy installation and the fact that the cockpit sole was just not designed to have the leverage of the pedestal.
4 pendulum windvane just works better on a tiller. in my opinion
5 simply less weight and fewer points of failure.
6 better feel, quicker response when running/surfing downwind

I dont mind a debate, though.. what are your thoughts?

Re: raymarine autopilot, edson pedestal, ritchie compass, navpod

The EV-100 can drive a tiller drive or a below decks one.

I would prefer a below deck drive if I could accommodate one.

If you're going to fit an above deck one, try to get a Wuxi Hongba HB-DJ809 with a 25cm stroke - it's the same as Pelagic use and a drop-in replacement for the Raymarine tiller drive.
