Racor 500

Like new. Used for just a couple of months then I upgraded to a dual Racor. Genuine Racor, not a Chinese knockoff.

$175 plus shipping. $290 at Defender.

Re: Racor 500

Hi David. Yes mine appears identical to the picture you sent. The only difference, in the catalog photo next to the close up it shows a metal cup around the bottom of the bowl. I picked one without the cup so I can see more easily if there is any water or trash inside the bowl. I'm on the boat now and the filter is in my garage at home. I can send you a picture when I'm back tomorrow.

Re: Racor 500

Thanks,
I believe the metal shiel is neccesary for abyc compliance, not sure if it can be retrofitted.

The metal shield is I believe a USCG requirement on some vessels, and unless I’m mistaken there is a kit to add it if you wish.

Just going from memory if it’s in the engine compartment it has to pass a burn test, which the Racor without the metal shield won’t.
Don’t quote me on this, I’m not a Surveyor and it’s from memory.

I am not sure if the heat shield is required for ABYC appliance or not but it certainly can be retrofitted.

My personal preference I thought it more important to see any contamination in the bowl than to use a heat shield in a diesel engine room.

Re: Racor 500

I found a reference to the ABYC standards online which I'm copying below. Note that it says all individual components. I assume that would include your fuel lines. So how many boats have metal fuel lines in their engine room instead of a rubber fuel hose? If your boat uses a standard rubber fuel hose like every boat I've ever owned then this requirement for the heat shield is kind of silly.

ABYC, H-24.5.7 states All individual components of the fuel system, as installed in a boat, shall be capable of withstanding a 2 ½ minute exposure to free burning fuel (N-Heptane) without leakage as required by Title 33 CFR, Section 183.590

Re: Racor 500

Looks like the kit is $85 from West Marine and the filter that you have is $179 new with free shipping, $240 with shield. How about $100 including shipping?

ABYC compliance isn’t a requirement I don’t think.
However the CFR that ABYC quotes, is.
It’s my understanding that the heavy fuel line required for below decks use will pass the burn test.
It may burn through 1 sec later, but I think it passes the test.
I’m under the impression that all fuel components, hose clamps, fittings etc all must pass the test.

If you don’t want the metal bowl, just mount it outside of the engine compartment, there is no requirement that I know of that states it has to be in there with the engine, and you may likely find an easier place to service it outside of the engine compt. To say nothing of a cooler place to service it.

A PM is the best way to discuss offers as opposed to posting them.

Sorry have been out working on the boat.

Thanks for the offer. I understand you've found a better deal online but for $100 delivered I think I'll just keep it an make a fuel polisher with it.

Re: Racor 500

Just to clarify, I’m fairly certain the steel bowl is a heat shield and is required only when installed near equipment such as close to or above the engine/ genset etc.
