Loran C Receiver, Buy now and avoid the rush!

H.R.5978 is working its way through Congress and if it becomes law, could re-establish eLoran as a backup for GPS.

This used and working Loran C receiver and manual are offered for sale. The receiver has an NMEA 0183 serial output which produces the strings necessary for an autohelm to navigate to a waypoint. The receiver and manual are available for $50 plus shipping. These items are located in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Re: Loran C Receiver, Buy now and avoid the rush!

I used to have a Loran C receiver in my Beechcraft airplane integrated with the autopilot, which worked extremely well at the time. Needless to say, it has since been replaced by a GPS unit.
I had not heard about the potential return of Loran C, but I will bet that the USCG is fighting that due to the expense of maintaining the stations, which is why the system was decommissioned in the first place. George

eLoran is not Loran C. The going rate for a working Loran C receiver on Ebay is $10, for a good reason.

Re: Loran C Receiver, Buy now and avoid the rush!

I had one similar to the OP. I threw it away when the chains were closed down and most of the antenna towers dismantled (stupid move by gov't IMHO). Even if eLORAN were backward compatible with the old sets it wouldn't be worth it. I used LORAN and don't miss the cycle-skipping and other problems. With a new system it might be worth it to buy a new set, but not the old one. $50? USB GPS receivers cost less. Just toss it and move on...

The government has abandoned most tower sites. I don't see it coming back any more than manned light houses and ships.

Probably, or at least possibly, there are bills for the return of manned lighthouses and/or lightships "working their way through congress."

I liked my Magellan Loran C until I got GPS.

I loved my Loren C also. It was basically coastal and is old school today.

It was great in Buzzards Bay and it showed you forty miles inland in an industrial park in Providence. Good riddence.

Heck I have a new Humminbird that shows me fishing 1 mile inland from the GOM. According to it I am dropping a hook east of US19!

For you non-Florida folks, that is bad!

GPS.gov: LORAN-C Infrastructure & E-LORAN
This may answer the burning questions
Coast Guard Authorization Act of 2015
LAW
President Obama signed this act into law on February 8, 2016.

View law (PDF)
Section 610 provides guidance and authority concerning "Disposition of Infrastructure Related to E-LORAN". It repeals and replaces the previous guidance enacted in Section 229 of the Howard Coble Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation Act of 2014 (SEE BELOW).

Section 610 also amends the statutory authorities of the Coast Guard Commandant codified at 14*U.S.C.*§*93(a) (VIEW TEXT AT HOUSE.GOV) to include:

(25) enter into cooperative agreements, contracts, and other agreements with Federal entities and other public or private entities, including academic entities, to develop a positioning, navigation, and timing system to provide redundant capability in the event Global Positioning System signals are disrupted, which may consist of an enhanced LORAN system.

Nothing would surprise me as to bills going through Congress.
