GaleRider Storm Drogue

Galerider storm drogue built by Hathaway, Reiser & Raymond. 48" in diameter when deployed, designed for vessels 30,000-90,000 pounds displacement. Never used, like new condition. It is constructed with heavy nylon webbing attached to a stainless steel ring and a large stainless steel swivel. This drogue dampens acceleration off waves and dissipates energy.

I paid just under $900 for it, will sell it for $495 and you pay shipping (paypal is best). It stows nicely and can be squished down pretty small.

I am located in Washington State near PDX

Re: GaleRider Storm Drogue

Can also be used as an emergency steering device if you lose rudder steering, maybe.
I say maybe cause if it’s jammed hard over, I don’t think anything is going to work, maybe.

It depends on getting it far enough outboard. I have done just that on a cat in testing. You can't go toe weather on one tack, but you can sail most courses and you can motor.

The Galerider does need to be sized larger than other drogues for the same effect. Much depends on what you are trying to accomplish. I do like the Galerider; very smooth and more resistant to surfacing than most.

I said maybe, cause there are all kinds of boats, and as I said a rudder can fail being jammed hard over, if so then I doubt anything would work.

However I bought a used Galerider myself, primarily to be used for emergency steering if it’s ever necessary.

Rob,
I am in Cathlamet, just 20 miles west of Longview on the Columbia.

What size is your boat? I have lots of line but the only lengths long enough are 3/4 and 7/8

I doo have a couple of hundred feet of 3/8 kevlar but no give in kevlar.

I own a gale rider as well but doubt my Island Packets 4 other methods of steering would all fail necessitating using the drogue to steer.

OK I’ll bite, I’m aware of the hole in the rudder, but that leaves three more, care to educate?

What kind of results did you get with the rudder over? Straight ahead? we're interested!

I was rather surprised to find I could actually sail weakly to weather in most circumstances (assuming the rudder was not hard over on the wrong side!).

You may find that even with the rudder hard over, the Galer Rider will offer some choices of stable course, which may be all you need (any port is better than going in circles).

GaleRider Storm Drogue

I’ve never done it. I’m pretty certain however that a rudder stuck hard over can’t be overcome, just an opinion.
Truth is I have never heard of an IP having a steering failure, it’s a real simple system.
However it is just a rudder, so I can see how that the internal structure could break away, leaving the rudder non responsive.
A theory is that is why an IP has a hole in the upper corner of the rudder, run a line through that and to the sheet winches and steer that way.
I’d hate to try to do that in real stormy conditions though.

On a beam reach and going to windward, I’m pretty sure in not bad seas I could hold a course with sail trim.
I’m pretty certain that I could not with a following sea though.
