You might consider a Seabrake 24GP. It is had about the same drag (the Galerider is very stable, but is large for the drag it provides. What is the boat size?

The thing is, any drogue will become unstable over about 5 knots. If undersized in a severe storm, they don't slow the boat less, they pull out of the wave and fail entirely, something like an undersized anchor. Just sayin'. I like the Galerider very much, but they need to be big. I tested a 30' Galerider on my 32' catamaran, and it was too small, even for emergency steering. I needed a 36 for steering in rough conditions, and perhaps a 42 for a storm.

Our sailboat is an Islander 40 between 25,000 to 30,000 lbs when ready for a passage so we are thinking drogue 42/48

Notice the difference in drag recommendations for a given sized yacht. Do you want something that will slow you down in reinforced trades or really control broaching in a severe storm?

I'm not giving advice, only pointing out that manufactures have different views of how much braking is required. YOU need to decide how much braking you need, and THEN chose the size that provides that. For example, Sea Brake and JSD are more conservative than the others. You have also chosen a conservative size within Galerider, splitting the difference.

Re: Galerider Drogue

Gale riders are available new from Landfall.

https://www.landfallnavigation.com/s...a-anchors.html

I’ve considered having TWO drogues.
Set one drogue to slow you.
Set the second at a different distance for survival storm conditions.

Some folks like the Jordan, but it slows too much so recommend a slowing drogue for those times. Then I got thinking, why not 2 drogues?
