To everyone looking for a good deal on a
sextant:
I have been exchanging PMs with a few forum members about this and other sextants. I just went on eBay to see what was currently listed. I was surprised to see how many
cheap knock-offs were being listed as Tamaya sextants. Probably none of these are at all usable for
celestial navigation.
If you see what looks like a mint or even new condition metal sextant - of any brand - for less than $300 ... run. I would be suspicious of any metal sextant listed for that
price, regardless of condition. Some people inherit a sextant, have no idea what it is and don't have any use for it. So it is not unheard of to get a great deal on one. But even those people usually do a little
research before listing the item.
If you are looking for a good used sextant, be prepared to pay $600
or more. If you find one that you're not sure of, shoot me a link and I'll try to check it out and give you my honest opinion.
Cheers, and happy hunting!
