Diesel

I’m looking for a 10-20hp fresh water cooled, 2 or 3 cylinder diesel for a repower project in my C&C 25’ sloop. I want to replace the Vire 7 (westerbeke) 2 stroke gas engine, and I’m not scared of cockpit modifications to do it!

Re: Diesel

I replaced a Vire 7 with a BMW 7 HP diesel. The BMW D7 was a marinised German "Hatz" engine. I did the conversion in the 80's on my Australian fibreglass production Tophat 25. I had to get a new prop to match the pitch and rotation but it gave me all the power I needed.
I wouldn't consider any engine bigger than a 12 hp at the most and I think even that is too big. Diesel engines need to be loaded up or the bores will glaze.
Work out your waterline length and hull speed then consult some engine manufacturers and agents and see what they recommend.
I hope my advice helps. I have no idea if those engines above are still available.
Regards, Wayne

Re: Diesel

The Betamarine 10hp is a good choice. Pretty much the same engine running at higher maximum rpm is the Betamarine 14 if more power suits. If the weight and/or size is too much this really only leaves the single thumper Yanmars as an option when it comes to motors still in production.

Re: Diesel

I’ve spoken to a beta dealer, and he states that the 10hp beta is identical to the beta 14, it was a matter of derating the 14 for regulatory purposes, so the 10 hp isn’t listed anymore. I take your point however, about the small yanmars, I had a yse 8 that never worked well, I’d. Rather not have a single cylinder. Twin cylinder fresh water cooled is the way to go, and I’m thinking Beta is the best combination of features for me. Haven’t seen any other used out there, but I’ll keep looking.
