Dacron Mainsail

Dacron mainsail, six (6) full length battens, three (3) reefs. Measurements:

Luff 40 ft 2-1/2 in
Foot 15 ft 10 in (loose-footed)
Leech 42 ft 6-1/2 in (although not sure this matters on a mainsail)
INCLUDED ARE ALL OF THE BATTENS. The luff has webbing loops - at each of the batten holders - that attached to mast cars.

Made in 2002 by Halsey Lidgard, Australia for a 33 ft Seawind 1000 catamaran. Boat was commissioned in 2003. I purchased the boat in November 2006 out of a charter fleet. The attached pictures were taken during the sea trial in Nov 2006. The two Boatpix proofs were taken in Sept 2007 - one of the last times the sails were used. The other measurement pictures were taken today.

At the beginning of 2008, I replaced these stock sails with larger, Pentex-material sails. (After 15 years of racing high-performance trimarans, the dacron just didn't have the shape that I wanted!) The dacron sails were removed, flaked and rolled correctly and placed in the replacement sail bags, and stored in my dry garage since. The sails are clean, and don't have any mold or tears, or stains. The pictures are not so good, as the light reflecting off of the sails makes for dark picture. But look at the Sailing 3 picture and you can see they are bright white. There is one small patch - shown in the picture – which has been on there since I purchased the boat Plus the batten pockets had some wear at one point so I had Quantum Sails (Kemah, Texas) reinforce the areas where the pockets rub on the shrouds. Reinforcement is heavy clear material (their choice for longevity).

Local pickup (Houston, Texas) is preferred, as the battens would be very expensive to ship. (They are stiff, and do not roll up.) If you want just the sail, I could ship it. But it probably weighs over 100 lbs, excluding any packaging. I will weigh it and report. I also have a few other pictures we took today doing the measurements that I can send. Just PM me for those.

PRICE: $450 for the mainsail INCLUDING the battens. Shipping not included. No discount if you don't want the battens. I’ve searched the internet sites for prices on used mainsails, and priced this main to sell. It is not a junk sail.

Re: Dacron Mainsail

To answer some questions:

Can be used with sail slides, or batten cars. The webbing loops can be attached to either.

Sail was on the boat from 2003 thru 2007, then removed in 2008 and stored. The boat was in charter fleet during that time, and judging from the hours on the motors, did not get as much use as might be expected for a charter sail. All sails were removed during hurricane season each year and the boat put away.

I'm just not a big fan of Dacron. That said, when my laminated main starts turning moldy after sitting in a damp stack pack, I will probably change my mind about that!

Sail numbers are stick on type, and can probably be removed with some work. (Not like the stenciled black marker ones the previous owner of my spinnaker did!)

Re: Dacron Mainsail

Wow, really thought this one would be sold by now. Asking about 20% of the new cost of the sail, albeit only used four years. We have some items to move to Port Aransas Texas over the next two weeks. If anyone is interested in the Rockport, Port A or Corpus Christi area, this is the time as we can transport the 15 ft long battens then along with the main sail. Kept the Dacron jib as a spare, but just cannot see keeping the Dacron main as a spare as well. Sails price like this usually have repairs required, etc - but not this sail. And I will ship it if you want to locally-source the battens or already have some.

Re: Dacron Mainsail

Got some measurements on the flaked sail in the bag. Mainsail in bag weighs 67 lbs. The flaked and rolled dimension - although might be able to get it a bit tighter for shipment, vs storage - is 12 inches by 17 inches by 29 inches. My zip code is 77069. I can prep it for shipping by putting it in a box cut to fit, and wrap it with thin rope so that the shipping agent can handle it.

The battens are stiff, 1 inch by 3/8 inch profile, with rounded corners. They are too stiff to roll. Longest one is probably about the same length as the foot ~ 16 ft. I suspect too expensive to bother with shipment, but you decide.

STILL FOR SALE/AVAILABLE.

Re: Dacron Mainsail

To ship the sail alone, or include the battens? Looks like UPS will ship the sail package, unless I missed some weight restriction someplace. battens might be over length limit for UPS.

When it rains, it pours. Just had someone contact me saying he wanted it, via a Craigslist post I had. Not sure whether it is going to work out, but sit tight for a day please.

Re: Dacron Mainsail

Ok, my best guess is that the Craigslist guy is a scam. Offered extra money to take down the listing, cashiers check payment, and referred to the sail as an item. Strange one though is that he wanted to do local pickup as soon as the check clears.

"Item", uh, I mean the mainsail, is still up for sale. I punched in package dimensions and Stuart area code into UPS, and shipping came back at around $60. Of course, without the battens.

They send a fake check for 3x the amount then ask you to send the extra back via western union. I usually have them send it. Keeps fedex in business.
