Ahoy Rol1964:
---Instructions---
IF you have no one to assist you / manage the winch on the mast, you can hoist yourself up using block-and-tackle from the boom which you have hoisted to masthead with main
halyard. (ie: one end clipped to bosun's chair, other end hoisted to mast head).
But a word of caution: ALWAYS collect the bitter end in a bucket tied to bosun's chair. DON'T let it fall casually to the
deck as you hoist yourself up.
I discovered this truism on a single-handed
passage when I was 300 miles
offshore. Somehow the bitter end got wrapped around the cleat at the base of the mast. Hanging there, 20 feet off the
deck, it took me 1/2 an hour of cursing/shaking the rope/cursing/shaking the
rope to get the bitter end off the cleat.
PS: It was this experience that resulted in my daily log entry which became my signature line to all my posts. <grin>
