More detail on the drogue
The drogue is a well-made creation, doesn't have any markings so I don't believe it was made by a sail loft. The hand
work is very nicely done and in excellent shape.
There are 4
parts of the drogue:
1. The
bridle is 5/4" diameter Double Braid in 2 lengths 45' x 45' long connected to a heavy galv. thimble and with ten ton rated galv. shackle
2. The leader is 5/4” diameter Double Braid that’s 65' long with galv. thimbles both ends and a ten ton rated galv. shackle
3. 5/4” diameter Double Braid 105’ long with 60 cones and a 6 ton rated galv. shackle
4. 1” diameter Double Braid 70' long with 40 cones and galv. thimbles both ends
The
bridle and leader are a full 5/4" diameter double braid. The first set of cones is run on the same diameter braided line and ends in one inch thick braid for the final set of cones. 110 cones in all. The weight of the braid is sufficient for a 30 ton
boat. There is no sign of chafe anywhere so I believe it is safe to assume that it has never been deployed. I'm looking to get back what I have into it $925. 25k
displacement drogue from the usual makers runs just under Fifteen Hundred with 3/4 or 7/8" braid.
Allow 150 pounds for the
shipping weight. The drogue weighs about 105 lbs. and I'm estimating the shackles to be around 25 lbs. and shipping/crating materials at around 20 lbs.
More information on the Hydrovane
I bought it new and used it on my
beneteau for a
Bermuda race and solo return to
Newport. After that it came off the
boat and went into the garage.
Plans changed and no more long distance sailing meant it collects dust which is a shame for such a great piece of
equipment. The configuration I got was for my Beneteau First 40.7 was a Hydrovane model VXA2D M/E/H
Drive Unit, Vane,
Rudder - US$4,032
'H' Bracket - $445
'E' Bracket - $551
'M' shaft - $910
My total invoice for the system was $5,835.00
Depending upon your
installation you will likely need to
purchase the mounting tubes from Hydrovane as each
installation cuts the stock lengths to size. You will also need to
purchase half of each bracket since the half mounted on the boat is still on the boat. All things considered, I'm asking
$3750 for it.
