New mast climber, only removed once from carrying bag.

Is it the newer gold colored rope clutches or the older black ones?? The newer gold ones can be attached anywhere on a line making them much more convenient to use. The black ones require a separate climbing line to be hoisted up the mast or threaded on from the bitter end of a line which won't work if you have spliced shackles and internal halyards.

A related question - has anyone used petzl ascenders or similar equipment and can recommend one over another. They are cheaper than ATN equipment and available locally

I have used both the GIBB and the Petzl ascenders in the past. All three devices are indeed very similar. I prefer the retainer system for the release pin on the GIBB, but the one on the ATN is very secure (just a bit stiff and awkward to use). However, there is no way you are going to lose that ATN pin when you are up the mast!
I think the big advantage to the ATN is that it is a complete system, with the webbing straps, styrups and bosuns' chair all pre-made and connected together. If you don't mind stitching webbing and feel you can put together a safe system by yourself, the Petzl ascenders will work just fine.
