Greg...It would be nice to see pictures of your Aries installed.

Here's a couple shots. One of the mounting and the other in profile.

Took me 15 hours to do the install. One man show. Must have dove down into the hole to get to the back of the transom over a dozen times. In a 28 footer it's a Houdini act every time. Sore and bruised, but couldn't be happier. Still need to renew the home port lettering.

Will be launching on Monday.

Very cool. I am from Canada also. Nice installation.

Beautiful boats Greg/Fortytwo. I see we all have the same eye for classic beauty. Here's a few of mine. I don't seem to have a lot of good shots, but hopefully these will illustrate.

Re: Aries Windvane (Self Steering)

Nice to see the variety of installations. Every install is unique and presents its own problems. On my former boat, a Cape Dory 36, we had a Model 5 Aries, which completely flipped up on a hinge to rest on its base.

It was an excellent vane gear. Served me well on a boisterous single handed W to E Atlantic crossing in 2002.

The simple and robust engineering of these vanes is, in my humble opinion, unrivaled and, thus, makes them very much worth saving, restoring and passing on to the next generation of cruisers.

Thanks again forty two. You embody the true spirit of cruising sailors.

Re: Aries Windvane (Self Steering)

Well folks...as often happens when trying to sell something on craigslist, facebook marketplace, my buyer flaked out on me. So yes...IT IS AVAILABLE...AGAIN!
And...thanks to "Fortytwo", it comes with a break-away coupling. If I don't sell it here or on the other media sites, I will make a wind paddle for it (2 hour job including paint) out of 6mm. Baltic birch. Then order the material from McMaster-Carr. I have a Machine Shop and can TIG up a frame work for a water oar. Then I would have to sculpture a foam foil and glass.
If I have to do that, the price will be more than 3 times what I'm asking now.

Re: Aries Windvane (Self Steering)

I did find out however, that shipping to Pa. was around $150. That was me crating it and going Yellow freight facility to Yellow freight facility.

Re: Aries Windvane (Self Steering)

I have something like 5 spare windpaddles for my Aries that I just took off the boat and put into storage (in Texas). If anyone needs one, they are welcome to pick one up !

Re: Aries Windvane (Self Steering)

Hey,

You might have good luck in parting it out, or selling it, through the active "Aries Windvane" Facebook group. (I'm a member). There are lots of knowledgeable enthusiasts who are rebuilding their own and also know how to get replacements... or perhaps require replacements... etc.

Re: Aries Windvane (Self Steering)

Hope the listing owner is able to find a new home for that Aries. Seeing it reminded me of the one I've had since 1989 which became included in my purchase of a 1980 Valiant 40. It remained used routinely in New England, long Island Sound and on the Chesapeake Bay, plus on the trips back and forth. When I sold the boat after 2006 it was included in the saie. Later, in conversation with the new owner it was indicated they were going all electric for steering. I bought the Aries back knowing I'd get back on the water again, eventually. Fast forward to 2020, I bought another sailboat and this one already had self-steering. So, rather that keeping it in storage, it is available. Pics show it as I picked it up with all Aries parts, including the attachment for a steering wheel. The lines shown are 30+ years old and recommended you replace all, one at a time. No shipping.. Central PA, $1100.

Re: Aries Windvane (Self Steering)

Just sold the Aries today to someone back east.
Winjamerk…you probably stand a better chance selling yours on a thread started by you instead of piggybacking on this one. It might get a little confusing.
