Aries Windvane

Seeing a recently sold listing reminded me of the one I've had since 1989 which became included in my purchase of a 1980 Valiant 40. It continued to be used routinely in england.html" target="_blank">New-IRJDSUNE9932123321222xxeww-England, Long Island Sound and on the Chesapeake Bay, plus on the trips back and forth. When I sold the boat after 2006 it was included in the sale, however later the new owner indicated they were going all electric for steering. I bought the Aries back knowing I'd get back on the water again, eventually. Fast forward to 2020, I bought another sailboat and this one already had self-steering. So, rather that keeping the Aries in storage, it is now available. Pics show it as I picked it up with all Aries parts available shown in the pictures, including the attachment for a steering wheel. There may be a small bag with blocks & other fittings to bring steering lines to the steering wheel if I can find it, however those are parts routinely available in your local marine supply source. The lines shown are 30+ years old and recommended you replace all, one at a time. No shipping but will deliver to a local professional shipper. Central PA, $1100.[Adding Photos Shortly]

Re: Aries Windvane

That looks like a really well preserved Aries model 5, the flip up model if I'm not mistaken. Had one on my previous boat and loved it. The best of the best IMHO.

Hope you will find a good home for it.

Best,

Greg

Re: Aries Windvane

Thanks for the comments. Not sure of model but it really held the line when you got the sails trimmed. This model could flip up from the top, which was not easy and I only did that a very few times. It was simpler to remove the paddle from the dinghy. A different model had only the paddle able to flip from a midway axis, I think. The paddle only was put on when I was going to use it. It has been dry stored since removal from the Valiant 40.

Re: Aries Windvane

I stand corrected, if it flipped up it must be a 5.

Re: Aries Windvane

Yup...model 5. Considered one of the best of the Aries.

Still available?
I think I have questions about mounting on a canoe stern. Could you give some advice?

If I'm not mistaken the model 5 is even heavier than the model 3 which itself was recommended by Franklin for boats no less than 28 ft minimum, and only if they had a fairly broad, buoyant stern. With the double ender stern on your SC, you might be pushing the limit to put such a heavy vane on.

Just some food for thought.

Thank you for that. I’ll pass but that narrows my search and truly appreciate your insight.
