Re: Air Conditioner

I do not think that that animal exist. As far as I know most installed units are user modified house units. The difficulty being the crossed air flow on the front side, cold coming out below and hot getting sucked in above. Positioned on the hatch of a boat it is easy for the unit to suck in directly its own cold air output and keeping the cabin and you in the hot air.

Re: Air Conditioner

At one time Cruisair made a carry on air conditioner which could be temporarily installed. It was mounted on the exterior of your boat and ducted into a hatch. I believe that Dometic bought out Cruisair but I'm not sure if they are being made any more. Used ones occasionally come up for sale.

Re: Air Conditioner

I second the use of portable air conditioner that lives in the cabin and is vented outside (you can downsize the 6" exhaust to 4" which is easier to handle and more standard on boats). You can easily move it off the boat after the summer or if you not longer need it (cost $289 or try local craigslist, often sub $100).

If you insist on a hatch mounted unit, you can consider an RV air conditioner such as Dometic for $669. I personally do not like the looks of them on a sailboat but it is definitely better than the West Marine alternative.

Re: Air Conditioner

I'm in Merrit Island, Florida.
I have a Pompanette Air, water cooled, 16,000 BTU in-boat unit which failed a year ago and sits in my garage near Orlando. Anyone can have it free if they pick it up.
It has the control box and I think it might need a new compressor, but that would be cheaper than a new unit, if you are any good at soldering.
It would also need a pump.

Re: Air Conditioner

I’m my opinion the permenantly installed heat pumps are far superior to anything else.
However they are expensive, $2,000 or so all in and are difficukt to install needing thru hulls etc. If money is the real issue then a window unit AC adapted to use as a hatch AC or used in the companionway is by far the cheapest solution, they can be had for about $150 in the US.
Next are the portables that use hoses meant to go out a window, they can be had for about $300 or so, but are less efficient unless you spend more and get a dual hose model.
