Yacht club membership - advantage or not?

I can't give much feedback on overseas but we often used yatch clubs on the east coast while not belonging to any club. Belonged to one for a couple years way back and didn't see the value in paying $200 to go to a winter ball dressed up in sailor suits (this wasn't a high end fussy type club).

We call up and if they are open to us staying at a reasonable rate, we do it. If not we thank them for thier time and move on. I'd say close to 90% have welcomed us typically at good rates. A few hem and haw a bit but an empty slip doesn't bring money into the coffers and they usually say it's fine.
