Wifi destinations

Currently looking for any good places I can anchor and pick up Wifi in the Florida Keys, but I would also appreciate any other anchorages up and down the east coast you can think of.

I'm also sure that if you knew of some in another location, someone would benefit from it

Thanks in advance!

Re: Wifi destinations

Welcome to the forum.

Since Google was publicly outed for collecting the MAC addresses of any open WiFi connection at the same time as they were photographing for "Street View" the open WiFi networks have very much dried up. There are still some out there, but far fewer than before. On the other hand, pay-for providers like Beacon (http://www.beaconwifi.com/)have been expanding their range and my be found in some larger anchorages. Also, some cities, like Miami Beach (WiFi @ City of Miami Beach) offer free WiFi that you can connect to from most of the anchorages around there.

Anchorages that we've found WiFi at in the past, have gone dead this year. So, all in all it's a moving target. I could not guarantee that, by the time you get to any anchorage I might suggest, that the WiFi would still be there. When you get to an anchorage you might just boot up the computer and give it a cruise through to see what's there. Sometimes you get lucky, sometime not.

Protectivepuppy

Go to www.activecaptain.com
Once in ActiveCaptain Interactive cruising guidebook.
Now zoom into the FL keys and you will see green anchorage markers.
Those will tell you where the good WiFi spots are.

Re: Wifi destinations

Thanks, Just wanted to state some of my own knowledge.

If you're passing through Cocoa,FL on the ICW, and stop at the Cocoa Village anchorage, there's a free wifi networkk there, as well as several free wifi hotspots in the town itself.

Re: Wifi destinations

I used to always keep my eye out for shoreside bar/restaraunts. Can make for noisy anchorages, but usually good for wifi.
