Re: Why do people pay for somebody else's fun?
I don't contribute to any of the sailing blogs but I do have cable TV. It's costs about the same as electric, water, cell phone, and natural gas combined. It's called entertainment and people are willing to pay for it. The sailing blogs could be MUCH cheaper, it's whatever you think it's worth.

When was the last time you went to the movies? At least the sailing blogs are politically neutral and actually real stories.

Because running a boat isn't cheap, and I've been a writer and editor (as well as a photographer) for 35 years: I can deliver good work.
But I don't actually require the (small) amounts of cash vlogging/blogging provides in order to do the trip and it's not a Euro yacht we're sailing in: it's a rather unromantic steel cutter. And we aren't so sexy. So I won't be needing Patreon or GoFundMe. That said, I don't blame them for making the ask. A lot of sailing is vicarious, especially in the winter.

I am a patreon for four vlogs two are informative , Boatworks today, Sailing Emerald Steel, and two are for fun. White spot pirates and sailing Uma. I usually switch to a new "poorer" channel when someone starts getting over a $1000 per video. I figure it is a way to keep things going. If they are idiots (yes they are out there) I don't give anything. If they are legitimately trying to learn and do things right. I like to encourage them. (never more than a couple of dollars though) It cost me about the same as a premium channel on direct TV and is much more tailored to my viewing enjoyment.

Sorry for the spelling, the type ahead does that sometimes and the phone small screen doesn't help much.
All i wanted was to understand why people support others and why one would take such an approach to start cruising.
Thanks

My email server has a "spam" button for stuff like that. Yours may have one, too, if you look.

Re: Why do people pay for somebody else's fun?
Some people enjoy living vicariously through others, and envision themselves part of the "team." i.e. Professional sports, Youtube sailors, etc. I like to scrimp and save to personally finance my own future dream, as opposed to "buying a beer" for someone of working age who is sailing the tropics - while I'm actually working, and not sailing the tropics. Having the gall to say this is considered bad form though. We must accept it as a more highly evolved culture. Just ignore it.

Re: Why do people pay for somebody else's fun?
People are paying for my fun. I sell products that they buy and that pays me to have fun. And other life duties.
Also, a film maker person makes a film, you go to the theater to see it and pay them. They go and have fun with that money. Some of them have LOTS of fun.

And, many of them buy huge yachts that they go have fun on. But, I'm all for boycotting Hollywood. Except for "The Last Kingdom". I have to watch that. I can't help myself. I'm an arseling.

Re: Why do people pay for somebody else's fun?
It's called TV.
AT this point I start to think I should have done the same as those people , i been sailing in Africa the last 2 months , exploring .
Some videos and cultural , dances and maybe I will be able to afford a new boat when back to Carribbean.
But I don't feel comfortable doing it , neither I am annoyed from others doing it .
I found other way to pay my way .

Re: Why do people pay for somebody else's fun?
What I would like to know is under what circumstances did a 2006 Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 45 lose a rudder? Those are nice looking boats, but are they really built for no-holds-barred ocean passages?

Yes, I don't get where all the hate comes from on this topic. It never crossed my mind. If you don't like, don't watch and / or don't give. Or watch and give. Who cares? Those who give obviously get utility from the watching and giving or they would not watch and / or give.
If a youtuber can get enough people to give so they can sail the world and live on a $750K Cat. It does not bother me a bit.
The most interesting part of the hate, is you have to watch it to hate it. It looks to me like a lot of people are either watching something they hate and continue to watch it in order to continue to think about so they can write negative things about something they say they hate. I guess some people like to hate, or like to pretend to others they hate in order to get some kind of psychic return.
I watch a few of the sailing youtubers on occasion, but don't give. Some of it is pretty good entertainment about things I love: sailing, independence, freedom, self sufficiency, nature, the sea, weather, different cultures, travel, managing risk. If there is something I don't like I don't watch.

Re: Why do people pay for somebody else's fun?
Why do people pay for someone else to have fun? Because the world has millions of armchair quarterbacks. Professional sports is probably the top dog in that world, where players are paid unrealistic sums of money to do what kids in the park do for fun. If the market supports it why not? We all have the choice of using the service or not. I don't watch sports either.

Re: Why do people pay for somebody else's fun?
Some of the youtubers we really enjoy. The handful who fly modest colors, learn from mistakes, and leave a good wake.
Learning how to live and sail on a boat can be a lot of work. Filming and editing adds a whole new dimension to which my hat goes off.
Besides, what's the big deal? It's at least as crazy to complain about this stuff in an online forum

I see no problem. You are going to pay one way or another for your entertainment. I personally do not financially support any YouTube sailors but I do enjoy watching. Rather pay them then corporate crooks
