How about Alexander Graham Bell, avid boater, boat designer and boat builder of any and all configurations (including a few that flew), and schooner owner/sailor. He had built, here at his boatyard in Nova Scotia, the Elsie as a gift for his son-in-law upon which the first discussions were had that led to the formation of the Cruising Club of America. She still sails here.

The thread is interesting aside from the lack of focus and clowning... It is interesting to learn that some of these familiar names were sailors or boaters. Who woulda guessed. Did you know that Puccini was an avid boater... not sailor I believe. Same for Billy Joel.

Of course musicians and actors as a occupation/profession are well known as celebrities. Cronkite, JFK, Buckley and Rivera probably can't carry a tune but are well known.. but mot as celebrities. Being known FOR sailing... misses the point of the thread... I think.
