What wifi range expander & Anyone use the Roku3?
Want to get a decent but affordable wifi range expander? I hear engenious makes a few but not sure which one is best.
Aldo just bought a Roku3 they are cool! Hooks to Tv and basically turns it i to a smart web tv, over 600 channels, lots of free movie options games and music and more for under $100.!

Re: What wifi range expander & Anyone use the Roku3?
I have the WirieAP. Pretty simple to install and use; I've been happy with it.
One thing I've found interesting is that the abundance of these in marinas has become its own worst enemy. In marinas (and to some extent anchorages) with a couple dozen of these guys on in close proximity, then the regular types of RF interference that can come from boats, it can really murder a wireless signal.
In the marina we're in now (Marina La Paz, Baja Sur) it's so bad that many people use a waterproofed cat5 ethernet line from the pedestal directly into their laptop onboard. There are so many people with wireless repeaters (it's nearly standard equipment at this point, literally on 50% of the boats) that the area is shrouded in wireless signals on the same channels and frequencies. Tons of noise and interference.

range expanders ( as in long range expanders) can be very poor at improving Wifi, you cant boost the remote transmitter and you can get the hidden node problem. 8db antenna and a good wifi transceiver are teh best best,
On this side of the pond , I find now I get better performance, from 3G routers onboard connected to a marine cell frequency antenna and a personal wifi network, then I do from a lot of marina wifis.
ROKU is a very nice device, you will need reasonable wifi to make it work, Ive struggled in marinas with it, now its at home where it works nicely.

Island Time PC here, stoked. I have a great signal when everyone else is complaining.

We have a Wifi hotspot, ATT device works great, but only in country, Nice though we can be out and about cruising and have a great signal,
Want the signal booster / better wifi antenna for use in our marina, and when in other countries. So we dont have to use our own Hotspot all the time.

I have a roku3 and a new apple TV.
If you are an apple family, you are better off with an apple tv because of airplay. However, the roku has a lot more functionality!

Do you use yours, with a wireless router? We met a boat named Island Time in the Bahamas, they used a similar system and picked up signals from miles away.
Do you know if this antenna can be mounted on a shroud?

I use a router with a USB plug in the back. We have the big 3TB drive plugged into it so we can access all the movies & music from anywhere on the boat. I can get a useable signal at 3 miles with this antenna.

I don't remember if they have a shroud mount but it wouldn't be hard to hose clamp a 4" piece of 1" stainless tube to the shroud and mount to that.

Hey Steve...Just ordered my Island Time unit last week. He added extra CAT line to run past the aft cabin to the salon. I'm not using a router, so I don't anticipate any problems.

There's just one of you, Martin. You'll be fine with no router unless you have a large media library and you're too lazy to get up and plug in a hard drive like me. Occasionally I give our router password to a neighbor who can't get a signal. I can't imagine another reason that you'd want a router.
