Re: What books to take on a cruise?

Being at sea is so intimate with nature, we should all have the book by the author of nature. The Bible.

Re: What books to take on a cruise?

I don't know about the more seasoned cruisers but as a novice the first book I would put aboard would be my check book. The next would be a prayer book. This way if I run into any problem and the first book don't work hopefully the second one will.

Probably not very helpful but hopefully puts a smile on your face.

You need the kinda pricey Shop Manuals ( not the Owners Manuals) for any engines. If you’re stuck somewhere, the mechanic in a far off place he’ll need the engine specs like valve clearances to work on the engine. Can’t rely on him having the exact ones you need.

Re: What books to take on a cruise?

A friend of mine bought me "Off the Deep End, A history of madness at sea" by Nic Compton. Interesting.... but don't take that one.

Re: What books to take on a cruise?

All the above plus Anna Karenin (Tolstoy), The Brothers Karamazov (Dostoyevsky), The Rubiat of Omah Kyham – where after each verse or two, self and crew decipher what is meant; the collected poetry of Khalil Gibran and some Shakespeare to be acted out by self and crew. Some Leskov and Turgenev and for some rollicking good stuff the collected poetry of Banjo Patterson. All this to encourage you to consider the human condition.
Stephen Hawking’s “The History of Time” plus your old algebra, geometry and calculus texts from high school. Finally a good source of Sudoku problems. This to encourage you to keep the grey cells active and be amazed at our collective intellect.
If interested in great books, consider that Euclid’s “Elements” is probably the most important book ever written. (There are some popular but mythological other popular books, but the “Elements” is based on logic.) A very good book written on the history of the “Elements” is “The Book of Wonders: The many Lives of Euclid’s Elements” by Benjamin Wardaugh. This book covers the history and impact on Western, Islamic and Asian intellectual development since its inception about 300 BC.
Another option is to write your own book. Become (in)famous.

Let me put in a plug for a book which taught me a ton about fishing.

The Cruiser's Handbook of Fishing by Scott Bannerot

Re: What books to take on a cruise?

Well I have a far better idea now, thanks

I will consider taking my 50(?) Lonely Planet tourist guides (mainly islands of the world) , The Circumavigator's Handbook, my Hiscock, Knox Johnson, Adlard Coles, Alan Lucas, Adrian Hayter (Phyllis in the Wind) books.

And I'll take books of general interest although that wouldn't probably include Stephen Hawking's book A Brief History of Time. I have books of sea life, bird life but some books on plant life around the world would be fascinating.

I had (with emphasis on the "had") a book on Australian politics 1900-1975 which I gave away yesterday in my big throw-out. Now I realize that would have been a good read but too late now.

Two Years Before the Mast. Maybe the best book I ever read.

Probably To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee and Sea Survival by Dougal Robertson since I already have them both.

Re: What books to take on a cruise?

I've got the message: it's not just the technical books but the "good reads" as well that go down well on a cruise.

Coopec, I know you are being inundated by entertaining reads so how about one last one, more of a head-book (ie quick read) "Fifty places to sail before you die" by C Santella....When you've exhausted all of your top 10 destinations, you can refer to this source for one or two more.

I do have books along those lines
  • Deep Water Cruising (Sturmeyer)
  • Cruising the Coral Coast
  • Cruising to Europe
  • Where to Cruise (Bill Robinson's thirty favorite cruises- a worldwide guide)
  • Eric Hiscock's books
I can pick up Chris Santella's book off eBay for around $20. Thanks
