Stand Up Paddleboarding, Who works out on one ?

Other than me who carries a SUP on there boat and does their daily exercise on one ? We have an inflatable 10' 6" all around board that works well but both my wife and I love paddling so I'm looking at a second board and probably a hard board. Yesterday I tried a 28 lb 14 ft carbon fiber race board WOW what a fast board, I'll need to double my distance paddling for the same workout.

I don't know where Clover Island is, but I would not want to be caught out here by the mouth of the Columbia on an ebb tide in a paddleboard!

Were 330 miles upstream from the Columbia river bar and the N Pacific on flat water most of the time.

After I wrote that I recognized you. Sorry. I would love to try out your paddle board in a nice calm harbor. Saw some up at Roche harbor. They seemed to be having fun.

I have a 12'6" Tahoe Zeyphr board and love it. I live aboard and get out on it whenever the weather is nice. Great workout too!

Nice board, it has been suggested to me by board stores. There is a local shaper that makes a nice carbon 14 ft downwind/touring board 30 in wide and very fast, like twice as fast as my previous board. About the weather in my marina bay I'll paddle until the water gets hard then bust out with my sailboat and go sailing I'm really hooked

Re: Stand Up Paddleboarding, Who works out on one ?

Sorry for thread drift, but I am wondering what the bridge clearance is for travelling up the Snake river to Lewiston? Is this doable in a sailboat or is that the domain of those grain barges only? Thanks.

Most RR bridges are at least 65 ft but up the Snake River about 100 miles there is one highway bridge that is 53 ft.

I'd love a couple of SUP when we take off cruising, but they'll be hard to store on a 35ft boat.

How does everyone store them onboard?

Webejammin,
So how well do the blow up boards work. I don't want to pollute my deck with a board, but I'm thinking about an inflatable. Any recommendations?

Our inflatable board is 10' 6" and at 15 psi it is ok for my 195 lbs but is great for my wife and can be rolled up to about 15" dia x 30 long with the pump too. The new 2013 inflatable boards ( Naish and Astro ) are 6" thick and I heard there more rigid with higher PSI to 15+, I am also looking at one of these in 12' to 14' long for flat water like an anchorage.

In my experience I HAD really tired feet ( after 15 min ) using the inflatable SUP until I started wiggling my toes to relax and wearing some type of water shoes with arch support now an hour or more and I'm still good.

Re: Stand Up Paddleboarding, Who works out on one ?

I have a 270 Caribe dinghy with a 8hp Yamaha.
I just stand at the bow with the oar fully extended......same exercise quality as a SUP.... one less thing to buy and store......easy trip home when I tire.

Cheers

Re: Stand Up Paddleboarding, Who works out on one ?

I should say, more young women SUP than men usually trolling marinas around the bigger boats

I have a YOLO 12'6" that we keep on the deck of our Hans Christian 36. It basically sucks up the entire port deck between the gunwale and cabintop, but on the plus side the the rainbow of jerry cans stay fairly well wedged.

It took a lot for me to want to gobble up that much space on the boat, but it's pretty much the only real endurance exercise that I can do consistently. Running sort of works but it can be hard if not impossible to find good roads or trails to run on wherever you end up. With the paddleboard, you just hop off and go. The 12'6" models surf like barges, but you can surf them.

Some other tips for anyone who's interested:

- Inflatables work but they're nowhere near the performance of a hard board. Obviously inflatables are much easier to store; it's about what you want. If you want to spend lots of time on your board, surf, and do some heavy distance, you're looking at a hard board. The shorter you go the better for surfing, the longer the better for distance. 12'6" is the "classic" size and strikes a pretty good balance. Anything under 10' is a bit squirrely for distance.

- Keep your bottom arm straight, punch forward with your top hand, and REACH as far as you can while twisting. Most of the power comes from the twist and you pulling your straight lower arm back.

- Get the paddle out of the water by the time it's near the back of your foot.

- Get some solarez repair stuff if you have a hard dinghy. Makes fixing boards a snap.

- Invest in a bag for the board. I have a Destination Surf silver one made of this tough-ass tarp material. Keep it in the bag as much as you can. If you're at anchor you can put some lines down on the deck to cushion the board, and then just sort of drape the bag over the board to keep the sun off of it.

I try to get on the water every day or so; if anyone is around my area (northern Baja) and wants to go out let me know!
