Santa Barbara Island, CA - Anchorage Open?

Hi everyone,

We are making our way up the coast and plan to travel over to Santa Barbara Island from Catalina next week.

I looked at the Parks website and they don't say much about Covid related closures.

I realize we probably cant go ashore, but was wondering if anyone knows of someone who has been to Santa Barbara Island in the past few weeks, and is the anchorage open?

Thanks in advance for the feedback.

Re: Santa Barbara Island, CA - Anchorage Open?

According to the Nat. Park website today, the park islands are open for visiting.
There is a specific problem at Santa Barbara Island in that the visitors dock is closed due to prior storm damage. However they say you can land at the adjacent rock ledge, although it may be challenging depending on sea state...

I havenít visited there since the late 1970s and at that time you had to tie your dinghy to a rusty steel ladder and step from the dinghy to the ladder at the top of the swell. No dock...

It is an interesting, remote place to visit, but not much there except seals and sea lions.

I don’t need to go ashore, just looking for verification from someone one who may have been out there recently to verify the Anchorage is still open with the C19 thing. I assume it is, just double checking. If anyone would prefer to PM me rather than post, please do.

The northern islands are open, except for the portion of Santa Cruz island controlled by the Nature Conservancy (for landing only, anchoring has no restriction,) so I suspect Santa Barbara is open too. If you are not going ashore then there would be no problem anyway.

Not sure if it is open or the landing situation, but please try to go ashore. Take a hike around the island, it takes two hours unless you stop and enjoy a few minutes. Consider kayaking around to Sutil rock. It is well worth the effort to go ashore.

The anchorage is definitely open. Going ashore is nearly impossible right now.

Re: Santa Barbara Island, CA - Anchorage Open?

Thanks for the replies. Heading out there with my son next week if the weather holds. We spend a lot of time in the water, so that’s my main focus. I heard you couldn’t go ashore on the grapevine. Is that due to C19, or is it due to damage to the little landing area?

I went there a few months ago but couldn't find a place to land my inflatable . There was another party that were able to pull their kayaks up the rocks to the dock. I understand that there is no overnight anchoring. I've done it though 8 or 10 times and often there is one or two other boats.

We Had a nice weather window to visit. Foggy upon arrival And couldnít see the island until we were about 300 yards out. A lot of water moving through and We were constantly changing direction On the hook so I went with a long scope. Water vis was good, but not as clear as Catalina.

Re: Santa Barbara Island, CA - Anchorage Open?

Hi Paddler. Were you able to go ashore. I went up to San Miguel Island .The weather was so nice. The first day going up (last Saturday or two maybe) there was much lightning so I stayed at Fry's Harbor and waited . Then It was perfect for a few days. I only stayed the one night and didn't go ashore. Sometimes It's too much work getting out the inflatable and outboard. I'm seriously thinking of one of those really small kayaks. I've read that SanMiquel is closed because they claim there are too many unexploded bombs laying around.

Hi JD, we did not go ashore but another boat let a few people off in their dinghy. Good to hear you had a good time at SM. The Islands are a special place.

Santa Barbara Island Dock Closed; Landings Restricted to Adjacent Rocky Ledge
Santa Barbara Island is open to public access, but landings are restricted to the rocky ledge adjacent to the dock. The dock is closed and is not expected to be repaired in the near future due to the severe winter storm damage.
