RECREATION, FUN, ENTERTAINMENT - NOT

We've suffered a massive onslaught of climate change in Michigan. 5 days of shoveling snow. 150 car pile-up on I-94 closing both E & W for two days.

Pictures below show the two harbors we frequently sail. Muskegon is home port with a 70 ft high light tower. Ice cover is 10 to 15 feet thick and covers nearly the entire height.

The Grand Haven light house is about 7 miles south. The Beacon is 52 feet.

That looks nasty. I'm sure there are still plenty of tugs, Lakers and fishermen sailing Michigan right now too. Imagine what that looks like 20 miles out from the deck of a 60' fish tug. Yucky.

NO. At this point, the channel entries are all ice choked & the fishing season is closed. Even CG boats are all out on the hard. Its possible the SOO locks are still operating but it will be tough to find a harbor. Not even a Youper would go out now. Unlike sea water, the lakes freeze hard. The shallows freeze first and the blowing ice pack is driven into the shore and channels. CG & police warn people off the jetties because they have no way to even retrieve the body.

Sheesh! Those pix remind me of why I never returned to Chicago after going to California for university! Spent the summers of my youth near Stony Lake, some 30 miles north of Muskegon, but never went up there in the winter.

IMO, ice belongs in G&Ts, not one's sailing venue!

Brrrr... (come on global warming!)

Re: RECREATION, FUN, ENTERTAINMENT - NOT

Last time I visited my parents in Kazoo, saw a picture what I think was the Saugatuck light during a storm. The light was almost entirely covered by ice with thick spray well over the top

We're having a cold spell with day time reps barely getting temps into the 70's. We'll just have to gut our way through it. Good thing winter is over in a couple of weeks.

Aloha

Up here in Lake Superior it's not much better. Our climate changed to winter.

Re: RECREATION, FUN, ENTERTAINMENT - NOT

And people from the US keep asking me how I can live in the cold frozen north. I live aboard on the east coast of Vancouver Island at about the 49th parallel. We have no snow and the winter temperatures average at about 7 deg. Celsius. The grass is green and spring will be here in two months. We can go fishing, skiing , and golfing in the same day travelling less than 100 KMs. I remember those cold winters in the prairies, but they are a fading memory.

Check out today's photos of the same Grand Haven Light house & jetties shown above following the 3-day storm. Minus 10 F tonight.

Here is the latest winter insanity a couple of days ago. This guy isn't even a Yooper.

We will, on occasion, bestow an honorary Yooper title on a deserving individual. This gentleman may be a candidate, hey. I'll bring this forward.
