Re: Philosophy of Sailing

Another big fan! Haven't read any books yet, I'm always stretching pennies so I keep an eye out at used book stores/sites...

Re: Philosophy of Sailing

Mr. Williams, Thank you for finding the words to explain what I have never been able too. When asked what it's like at sea I've always told people that "you go out looking for adventure, something to add to a full life. But when you get there you find out that you were never really whole until the sea rocked you in its cradle and carried you across its face. And when you come back you realize the only place you were ever complete is at sea and it forever haunts your dreams and calls you back." It's a rather crude explanation and I have always found it difficult to explain. But you have found the words I could not, I love your books and your videos. Thank you sir.

Re: Philosophy of Sailing

Ahoy All:

After a number of years of mostly solo cruising, I came up with an explanation I would share with people who asked "why".
It was simply this: To make a long passage across a vast ocean in a small boat is to challenge the gods. But to arrive safely is to sit among them.

Then of course there's that old quote--from Lord Chesterton in the 1800s I believe--"He who would go to sea for pleasure, would go to Hell as a pastime."

Read your book when it first came out.

Then watched your videos on Youtube.

Now re-readying the book with new appreciation.

Re: Philosophy of Sailing

I remember watching his videos - he was one of the several people who inspired me to get into sailing. Love his presentation, humor, positive attitude and drive for adventure (especially as we get older). He is a great guy i think.

Some of my favorite bits (which are hard to pick, the videos are great all around) is when Christian is dancing on his own and trying to stop the lamp from buzzing, then talking to it.

Re: Philosophy of Sailing

Well I really enjoyed the book. Thanks for writing it. A bit of Mark Twainish humour along with a wonderful Readers Digest condensed book version of philosophers throughout the ages.

I thought I was the only one that talked back to the voices in the boat at 3am a thousand miles from nowhere.
