Hose rules: you can use, make any word with the available letters. If challenged, you must be able define part of speech and use it in a sentence. This really gets to the English majors.

I find Jenga quite entertaining and more challenging at anchor.

I also pack about a half dozen with me as gifts for the children on the islands...they love it...also soccer balls.

Captain's Mistress is another game (for 2) that is fun and also easy for kids of ALL ages.

Card games...I love Cribbage...2 - 4 players.

Single player games - I like puzzles. Rush Hour is fun and compact.

Cards, not board, but: Quiddler. 1-8 players. 30 minutes per game.
Imagine the lovechild of Scrabble and Rummy. With ADHD.

Re: List of one and two person board games

The best 2 player game I've ever played and keep on my boat is Twilight Struggle. A Cold War card based strategy game. You could play it solo, sort of, but really only for the reason of trying different strategies. I don't know of any fun solo board games. I need another person to play with, personally.

Twilight Struggle is great but you need a partner who is also willing to play.
Steep learning curve but worth it - particularly if you match the game with US and Russian music and alcohol!

Re: List of one and two person board games

I play alot...

Competitive (2 to 4 players)

Sushi go: Card game about collecting sushi sets.
Everdell: Building a city for woodland critters. Hard to know if you've won or lost till the end.
Epic Spell Wars of the Battle Wizards, Duel at mt Skullfyre: Yes thats the name. Card game, craft spells, destroy your enemy.
Quirkle: Wooden tile laying pattern game. Suprisingly tactical.
Exploding Kittens: Card playing, blow up the opponent.
Unstable Unicorns: Set building card game
Mariposas: Monarch Butterfly game... hard to describe.

Cop

Pandemic: Save the world. Very easy to loose.
Forbidden Desert: Repair the airship and escape the Desert
Elder Sign: Investigators trying to stop the resurrection of the cold ones.

We always have a Rummikub set on board. It's got tiles, not cards, so it's wind resistant. 2 - 4 players and can be a good brain exercise at times.

Stratego, Chess and Go.

Old school? Perhaps.

Any game made for 3+ players is never going to be as good as a game designed for 2 players and only 2 players.

Go is such a beautiful, elegant game. Alas I have no mind for it.

A forgotten classic is Gin rummy or any of the other Rummy game variations.
