Is it "Creeping"
My kids now have informed me of a new word. It seems there are many new words being created all the time. This word " Creeping" is an internet or "Facebook" related word. It means to look at other peoples facebook pictures. Being new to this site ( I don't have a facebook account - this one is much more interesting!) I want to get an idea of what's acceptable. What are peoples' opinion? Is it ok to look at CFer's pictures and public profile?
I signed up here to make friends with simular interests, so when I break free of "Tera Firma" I might have friends of simular interests to do like things. So I have been looking at a variety of users profile. More so maybe of the crazy antics of Zee or Boatman for example.
Well?

Re: Is it "Creeping"
If they're publicly posted, they're specifically intended for anyone and everyone. Maybe why I don't post photos But if they're there, I don't see any reason not to look -- I think people want you to.

Re: Is it "Creeping"
Yep, my teenage daughter says the same. By definition I don't understand her!
If you put pictures on a public space, then folk WILL look, that is what folk DO.
I look, others look.
Perhaps the intent by some is questionable at times but we have little control of the intent of others.
When one walks down the street, does look at others - yes of course. Ones intent in looking can be good or bad but there is no way of knowing others intent most of the time!
I tell my daughter "Judge yourself by knowing your own intent and don't judge others unless you really know their intent". Does she listen, well yes, does she hear, hmm, not sure!
Of course it is OK to look (creep??) on CF

Re: Is it "Creeping"
People are so stupid, if you don't want it seen or used don't put it out there.
People have been sacked, stalked and worse for the stupid things they have put out there on facebook and other social media sites including forums.

Re: Is it "Creeping"
Creeping is only lurking by a new moniker and specifically related to viewing of pictures, rather than text.
It has long been advised to lurk the forum before posting in order that the newbie wouldn't commit an internet faux pas and become the target of a flame.
Although nowadays even the time honoured traditions of oldtown internet are ignored and I think most of the new generation doesn't even know how old the internet is much less care about antiquated protocol created by its founding fathers.

Cheers,
Just wanted some feed back maybe so I don't feel I'm doing something " Taboo".

Re: Is it "Creeping"
What kind of fish is that anyway? Looks like a cross between Queen Latifa and Frank Zappa

As long as you're not 'out there doing it' (whatever 'it' might be,) while you're lurking, you're not really creeping...

Re: Is it "Creeping"
IF it is on the Internet,
AND it is not encrypted,
THEN it is, for all practical purposes, visible and meant to be seen by everyone.
Note that "everyone" includes several companies that make their money by building a comprehensive profile of every single thing you do online so that they can sell your eyeballs to advertisers.
If you want to put something online, and you don't want it to be public, you encrypt it with the intended recipient's public key. If you post something to Facebook or a forum, expect that anyone, anywhere can read it. If you don't want people to read it, you don't post it.
"Creeping", in the social networking context, is more about spending an excessive amount of time looking through someone's posts without leaving comments or otherwise indicating your interest. It's considered rude in the same manner that listening to the conversation at the adjacent table in a restaurant is considered rude, but it's not rare, illegal or unexpected.
