Re: Is a tent worth owning?

I think it owning a tent is a good idea, especially if you are not OK sleeping under a tarp or under the stars.

The good news here is that there are a lot of very light and compact tents, so they won't take up much space. I personally plan on camping a few nights when cruising with my son. It's nice for a change to go sleep on the hard.

Comes in handy if you hit a reef on a deserted atoll.

Seems like it would have been a GREAT time to be camping and away from people. If there ever was a time to throw your tent in your car and get out of town, the last 14 months of ridiculousness was it.

I backpack and car camp, so own several tents, but I can’t say I’ve ever wanted one while cruising. Far less buggy on the boat for one thing.

Re: Is a tent worth owning?

Thought of this thread recently. I finally got back to the boat after a year away due to COVID. I didnt want to bother with getting a cabin back in order, nor sleep below if it was moldy and funky, so I brought along my Hennesy Expedition hammock (large rain fly and no-seeum mesh). Strung it up in the rigging and slept outside.

Due to the oversized rainfly it stays nice and dry even in torrential tropical rain, but I would not want to be strung up in the rigging if big lightening came along! Fortunately there was none...only way off in the distance and mostly just cloud to cloud.

The Hennesy is great for camping ashore too. So overall a camping hammock might be a better option for combined boat/land use.
