Fishing from the Sailboat

First fishing trip aboard the sail boat where fishing was the actual intent. We headed south trawling with no luck all the way down to South Carlsbad. We drew in our lines and headed over to see about fishing some kelp. Wound up in the kelp with no way to anchor, so we worked out way back out to clear water and then started north.

We noted a sailboat at anchor fairly close to shore in a place where we had seen one of the commercial fisher boats. Made our way their direction. Once we got close, about 500 meters, we found them to the inside of the kelp line and they were fishing. We decided to anchor on the outside of the bed by about 50 feet and dropped it into sand with 80 feet of line (first time!). This held us in place and we started to cast some Krododiles. After a few minutes, we were pulling up Barracuda...lots of Barracuda. We then started into some schools of Bonita and Mackerel as well.

Rich caught a juvenile Sand Bass before we started for home. About a ¼ miles south of Oceanside Pier, Rich caught a Calico Bass on a trawl! It was the first time he had seen that happen and it was really a great ending for our day of fishing.

We chose to release all of the catch and just enjoy the sport of it all. Look forward to doing that again soon!

Total count for 2 anglers was about 30 Barracuda, 3 large Mackerel, 3 Bonita, 1 Sand Bass and 1 Calico Bass.

What a fun day and now we both know that the Catalina works as a fishing platform.

Re: Fishing from the sailboat -

Hello from New England! We fish off our 36' EndeavourCat. When we drift fish for flounder and sea bass, we often notice other boats passing close by...they are checking on us; when they get close enough to see the fishing rods out, they go on their way. I tend not to stock the galley with any meat and if we don't catch dinner, we eat beans (it helps that I like beans, but we rarely HAVE to eat them).

We are hoping Bertha stays on track and the offshore swells dissipate by Friday. We are planning, if the weather cooperates, to head straight south from Narragansett Bay for an overnight at sea, trolling for yellowfin tuna. Our boat motorsails very comfortably at 6 1/2 knots, perfect trolling speed. If the forecast is less favorable, we will try for other tuna species closer to shore.

I am a longtime sailor; Tim loves to fish. We try to do both as much as possible.

Re: Fishing from the Sailboat

We will often have a couple of lines trolling while under sail and if we get a bite, we slow down enough as to not have to fight the extra speed. It's a great feeling to know you can catch your dinner while sailing to your destination!

klmmicro: Sounds like you had an awesome day
