External Hard Drive / Storage on a Sailboat

Hello - I'd like to have about 4TB of storage available to my laptop when I start cruising this fall.

What are some of the storage solutions other cruisers on this forum have adopted?

Thanks
-Jordan

Re: External Hard Drive / Storage on a Sailboat

External harddrives that run on 12v work fine. Have a seperate drive to backup all computer drive and external drive data.

We use 1Tb portable hard drives for all our movies and music as per the link above, very happy with them.

Portable hard drives of all sizes exist and are easy to find. Storage costs have dropped dramtically over the years. Many different kinds, 12V or USB or mains powered ones.

Whatever you do, backup, backup, backup

Increased reliance on computers

Re: External Hard Drive / Storage on a Sailboat

I was thinking more along the lines of redundant storage of some kind.

For redundant storage you could use a Dropbox, as we do for regular backups; or external hard drives, as we also do for the likes of movies and other non essential stuff that doesn't need updating regularly.

I haven't tried this SkyDrive thing yet, but I would be interested to hear about members' experiences with that.
