The Car Carrier Golden Ray which is in the process of being cut up, is now on fire.
Huge plumes of smoke are pouring out and the winds here have been 10 to 15 knots for days. The
salvage crews are using sea
water, not foam which is toxic to
marine life. The concern is that heat damage to the
steel of the ship will increase the problems in removing the wreck which is very close to the edge of the
shipping channel.
Weakened
steel pieces could fall into the channel or the remaining wreck could slide into deeper
water. We are headed to Brunswick on Tuesday afternoon and will add to the post.
The manatee crew.
