[safe] Dry storage in Panama for ~ 20 year old aluminum sailboat 39 feet.

I'm trying to estimate costs to store a boat in Panama for perhaps 8-10 months in Panama. Boat is located in Las Perlas. I think dry storage would be the safest / best bet until I'm able to go cruising.

Then I'm looking for locations where I would put the boat in dry storage, but hopefully not raided by theives.

Shelter Bay seems to offer this service. Boat is on the Pacific side. Are there any other locations where I would consider dry storage for 8 - 10 months?

https://www.cruisersforum.com/forums...al-169458.html seems to have some related haul out info. But specifically looking for dry sailboat storage.

I dont know of anywhere on the Pacific Coast that does dry storage of sailing vessels. There is one boat/ship yard that might, Ive forgotten the name, but will look up.

The only option I know of on the Pacific Coast is Astillero Nacional in Puerto Vacamonte. This is more of a commercial facility, but some yachts do haul out there.

There are many more options on the Atlantic coast: Bocas Yacht Services, Shelter Bay Marina, Linton Bay Marina, PanaMarina.

I had a look at Shelter Bay's pricing. For a 40 foot boat and planning on storing it for 10 months look like .35c / foot * 39 feet * 30 days it's 410$ / month not including haul out fees. After haul out fees it looks almost as expensive as keeping the boat at dock. Might think 2X about dry storage.

There is a new marina, Vista Mar Marina, just west of Panama City, very nice and price competitive to boot. Highly recommended.

Yes, Marina Vista Mar on the Pacific side. We had our boat stored there in summer of 2019. Excellent treatment, good price. A bit of a drive to Panama City for boating supplies, but everything else is available in the towns nearby. Housing is available within about 1km walking distance.

Yes, last time I was there it was indeed more expensive to dry store than dock.

Good to known. Some wording on their web site is future tense so good to know it is now real.

Do they have dry storage?

It looks like for a 40 foot boat for wet or dry "moorage" I'm looking at around $500 a month in Panama (3 months+ stay). It's not much different than moorage costs in the USA. Are there more affordable marinas or is this the general cost of moorage for the country?

You could try Carlos's marina in Boca Chica in Western Pacific Panama. He had several boats on the hard there when I was there years ago. https://www.chumicosmarina.com/services

This one sounds a bit big for Carlos. Does he have a trailer that will handle this?

USA rates vary dramatically depending on venue. There are many places in the USA where $500 is several multiples short. So not a valid general statement.

There are less expensive places in Panama. In Panama, except for Panama City and Shelter Bay, rates tend top out at about $500/month for boats under 50'.

In Bocas there are several smaller storage only marinas (in water only) which are less expensive. Some are unofficial. Ive paid less than $200/month there before.

PanaMarina mooring field rate for a 39' mono over 90 days is $0.29/foot/day = $340/month.
