I am looking for a winter dock in S. Florida

I'm taking my boat down south at the end of the month and would love to find an affordable slip to keep my 40 footer (preferably in the Miami / Ft. Lauderdale area) over the winter.

I've had no success with affordable marinas, but was hoping I might find a private slip. No joy with craigslist. Are there any leads out there to help me? I was thinking maybe a local sailing magazine or something where slip owners might advertise a vacancy?

Thanks for the response. While the linked magazine looks like what I was thinking about, there was only one add for a dock and that included a house to go with it. There must be quite a few backyard docks on the canals that could use a boat like mine to make them look better. If only I knew where to look.

Why not go south to the Keys area - plenty of legal, illegal, private, and public docking/marinas. Or try west coast Florida - Marco Island!!

Also, in finding a private dock - I have successfully used trulia and zillow for real estate ads and just searched on "dock" or "boat" to locate (temporary) possibilities.

Problem I encountered was that most owners will not let you stay on your boat or work on it, fix things. Just listed for winter storage. Also a lot of docks I fund had no parking room available. Especially in the overbuild Lauderdale-Miami area.

The ft. Lauderdale boat show is here. For weeks before and weeks after good luck. They chase out thousands of year round boaters at this time to make room for the show. Those boaters make reservations a year in advance for the available spaces. Farther north of West Palm Beach and farther south of Miami is your best bet. Even without the show it's very difficult to find a dock behind a house or such that will allow liveaboards. Oh, and affordable in Ft.Lauderdale? Smiling a bit on that one.

A live-a-board situation is generally tough at the get-go. However, at many I'mmarinas slip holders can sub-let their slips for various periods including up to six months and even beyond when traveling. Might check with the marinas to find out if there are any posted. Here at my marina availabilities are not published; only posted locally. You might also post a "sub-let sought" at where you wish to go.

However, LAB might require sub-letting a "live-a-board slip" that is normally so occupied. The rate is negotiable between you and the slip holder. It typically cannot be higher than the established marina rate although it might be lower. Folks that are traveling, planning to, or have their boat at a remote location with an empty slip at home might go to half-rate to recover some of the cost.

One available in Tampa Bay. Not south fl, but a great sailing area.
